I had a pair of Alpinestars Octane riding shoes... hated them. Loved my Aplinestars SMX Plus boots, the shoes were awful.

I would find a lace up if possible - something like the SHIFT RACING FUEL STREET

eBay is a great place to buy them.

You can try these two ::

For the street, I use the Apinestars SMX-1 shoes:

They fit great and have what I think would be decent ankle protection (heels and toes seem pretty well protected). I would like more but... there's a balance between risk and protection that I'm going for and these fit the bill. Plus, they're comfortable enough that I've actually worn them all day at work.

For the track (and like Darrin), I've got the Alpinestars SM-X Plus boots:

They fit great as well and the protection, from what I can see, is top-notch. I crash-tested them a while back and found that they were worth every penny that I spent on them. There's just not enough ankle mobility for me to want to use them for extended periods of non-track riding.

I wear an earlier version of these under jeans on the street and have ridden in them all day and through multiple states without an issue. They've got some light built in ankle protection and the toe box is rigid enough to have gone through a few impacts without more than a scuff.
