FZR400 Engine Removal?

Post by ~JM~ »

I'm in the process of stripping down my '88 FZR400 & I'm having a problem dropping the engine out of the main frame. I have removed the lower frame rails, all the accessories & all the fasteners... I think. For some reason that engine is still hanging in there & won't come out.

Is there some secret fastener/bolt that I have missed?

Is there an online manual that shows all the motor mounts, or describes the process to pull the engine properly?

I've never experienced this level of difficulty in pulling an engine before & I'm thoroughly baffled at this moment. Any replies will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

As well as the two frame rails there are two massive bolts at the back end of the Gearbox housing that need to be removed. I would imagine you have already removed the fuel tank, airbox, carbs and exhaust header? Unplug everything from the loom.

Although this is the later 3TJ engine the engine casings are identical. The back end of the gearbox casing is near enough flat. You can just make out where the rear upper and lower engine bolts go through. After loosening both I would undo and remove the top one first. Let the engine swing down on the second bolt, then knock that one through and slide the engine away.
