NUTS AND BOLTS RANT!!!
This is just a rant but one I'm sure is the bain of other peoples mechanical lives!!
I HATE ALL PREVIOUS OWNERS OF BIKES WHE SEEM TO THINK THAT COPPER GREASE OR ANY OTHER BOLT THREAD PROTECTION IS OPTIONAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've just stripped my rear wheel down in preparation of dropping it in at the powder coaters!
Wheel off, no worries! Sproket carrier off, no worries! Sprocket and cush drive rubbers out, no worries! 3 sets of bearings, nothing unexpected and out in 10 mins! All easy because i'd changed all these items before on this bike and me being a thinker put copper slip on first!!
However brake disc bolts.......................
1,2,3,4,5 out with a fair bit of resistance, WD40, skinned knuckles and swearing. bolt number 6!!! what a pig!! still not out 24hrs later!! penetrating fluid, freeze spray, bent allen keys and no joy!! I know someone has had these bolts out before (and put them in dry) because its an after market disc and the wheel's been resprayed (badly) at some point.
judging buy the white powdery corrosion on the threads of the last 5 bolts this one's in for the long haul!!
GRINDER ME THINKS!!!!!!
WHY CANT PEOPLE JUST THINK BEFORE DOING! A LITTLE COPPER SLIP WOULD MAKE LIFE SO EASY FOR NEXT TO ZERO COST!!
NEVER NEVER NEVER PUT IN A DRY BOLT!! AND ANYONE WHO DOES NEEDS TO HAVE A HUGE SPANNER INSERTED FORCFULLY IN TO THEM!!!! PREFERABLY OPEN ENDED FIRST!!

Re: NUTS AND BOLTS RANT!!!
Dont even start with bastiding brake disc bolts, i had the exact same problem but with two bolts not just the one, they rounded of quicker than you can say rounded, wouldn't budget with a screwdriver slot cut into them, and had to be removed by grinding off the head, grinding a cross into the top of the shaft and impact driving them out, took about 45 mins for each, the culpret for this problem... excessive use of loctite, probably had enough in those two bolts for all 6 bolts. I was told to weld a metal bar at 80° to the bolt and they should twist out mate.
Re: NUTS AND BOLTS RANT!!!
Use a little heat. Either by way of a torch or a small propane torch. Works " almost" every time.

Re: NUTS AND BOLTS RANT!!!
the powder coaters have the wheel now and said that they will extract the offending article for me!!
i'm a man of little patience so this is probably the best way! stuff like this is so stupid and easy to prevent! drives me mental!
i dont own or have access to welding torches nor can i be trusted with one! there'd be a small mushroom cloud over north yorkshire if i had one of them!!

Re: NUTS AND BOLTS RANT!!!
Anti-seize on a brake disk bolt - are you serious? A bolt on which you're supposed to apply RED Loc-Tite??
Anti-seize makes it EASY to remove the bolt. Why do you want your brake disk bolts to come out easily?
You show me in the Yamaha service manual where it says to use Copper-slip on ANYTHING. I will quite cheerfully show you where it says to use Loc-Tite (or Yam equivalent). If the bolt doesn't come out easily, SOAK IT. Then HEAT IT.

Re: NUTS AND BOLTS RANT!!!
firstly grind opposing flats on the sides of the bolt head then use a pair of mole grips to tightly clamp across the head like in the image below
then pass a bar through the jaws of the moles and use it as a lever to turn the bolt out. A bit of heat around the bolt head also helps to soften the loctitie prior to removal and always use good quality allen keys/sockets in the first place (which most 2nd users already do but by then the damage is already done)

Re: NUTS AND BOLTS RANT!!!
In response to donTZ125, lock tight on the thread yes!!! Copper slip on the inside of the hub where is exposed to the elements!!! Big holes in hub equal water ingress and moisture in the atmosphere ergo corrosion! Put a dab of copper slip over exposed bolt end removes problem!! Simples!! When you live in the uk and ride all year round with salt all over the roads things like copper slip are a must!!!!!! engine casing bolts!! fairing fasteners!! axle bolts!! suspension linkage!! the list goes on and on!!
If you buy anything from Pro Bolt you always get a tube of cooper grease. Why would they do that then eh? not cos you dont need it!! steel bolts and cast alloy are at opposite ends of the nobility table! corrosion is a certainty.
its not like orange county choppers wher you build a bike dry to put in a show case! if you dont use anything other than thread lock on your bike sooner or later the bolts will seize & you will round off bolts and even snap them if the corrosion gets bad enough! in adition the constant heating and cooling of engines, brakes, hubs will speed up the process. its common sense.
just because the YAMAHA manual dosn't say it ,don't mean you shouldnt do it!!!
Stig, if i had a grinder thats where i would have gone but i dont at this point. my garage is not as well equiped as would like as i only moved into a house with a garage in november. prior to that the bike lived outside all year round. i would have alot of this kit by now if the missus hadn't gone mental with new sofas, tv units, wardrobes and such!! i earn she spends!! such is my lot on that front!

NUTS AND BOLTS RANT!!!
Heat for rotor bolts. It was the lecture holding the bolt in not corrosion.

Re: NUTS AND BOLTS RANT!!!
crowe, I hear ya mate. Time will come when the house is done and you'll then have spare for toys and tools..... but then like me, you'l get too much stuff and run out of space LOL. (then she'll want to move to somewhere bigger and start again)
BTW, I used a dremmel for the flats...just took my time so as not to mark the face of the rotor

Re: NUTS AND BOLTS RANT!!!
space is already at a premium! all the crap she dont want in the house appears to have migrated to MY garage!! i dunno, i finaly get a man cave and within 3 months its full old shite we dont need but "may come in usefull at some point"
a dremmel is another must have which i dont have along with an impact driver. i think the screwfix catalogue is gonna get abused soon!!

Re: NUTS AND BOLTS RANT!!!
same with me! but took 3 weeks to fill, though there are 3 bikes, generator, tool boxes etc in there aswell, i just keep stepping on, dropping, knocking things so she moves them before the get damaged more. I don't do it deliberately, ... honest!
