Thoughts on buying a non-running bike.

So I have a line on a non running 91 FZR600. The owner claims that it only needs one part and it will be good to go (supposedly a pick-up coil). Its high mileage ,54k, but from the pictures I've seen it looks to be in good condition for its age and mileage, and still has all the plastics. They have it listed as a possible parts bike if they get no interest and are motivated sellers it sounds like. But they are asking $750 for the whole bike. Am I crazy or does that seem high? Anyone have thoughts on what a fair offer would be?

If it only requires a coil, have the current owner replace it and show you that it runs. Chances are that it is a lot more than that. I bought a non-running ATV and had to split the cases.... no fun.

The best way to price (a non-running bike) it is to figure out how much you could get by parting it out and cut that price in half.

Yea. That's what seems odd to me. The fact that it "only" needs a coil but the owner hasn't bothered to replace it.

Figured I could pull some of the parts I'm interested in off of the bike for my current FZR (all the plastics and mounts, and a few other odds and end). Try replacing the coil to see if it runs. And if it doesn't just part out what I can. Figured if I got them low enough on the price worse case scenario is I make my money back but now have all the plastics & odds and ends I need for my current FZR.

It 'only' needs a part that isn't particularly available by itself. The pickup coil is bundled with the stator coil, which unfortunately drives up the price.

If the bike looks decent it might be worth it. My FZR600R (YZF600) cost £400 off ebay and wasn't actually running due to a damaged ignition switch. I figured as it had been recently serviced it would be worth a risk. If I did it again I would take a replacement switch as I would have picked up on the dirty carbs and holed collector that couldn't be seen with the belly pan/tank etc on.
