First..the M1 is a race bike and some of what was developed on that bike has transferred to the current R1 (hence the way it sounds). Second, there is government regulation that limits modern bikes to go no faster than 186mph. Take the limiter off (which can be done with a programer) and you can go that fast...someone correct me if I'm wrong. You want a 1000cc+ bike that goes above 200 in stock form? 99 Busa...not regulated and should top out at 210 (maybe faster).

Umm, would you do a complete teardown of your engine every 1.25hrs. of riding? Replace 16 valves and 9 bearing shells- and maybe a crankshaft and pistons each weekend? Pay $45 a gallon for fuel?

That's what the yzf-m1 gets. two, maybe three practice/qualifying sessions and a race.....and then EVERYTHING gets scrutizined, if not replaced (by the best in the business-not some kid in his apartment complex carport).

If you want top performance from Production bikes you have to have DEEP pockets eg. the kind of mod done to TT IOM road race bikes and just look at how many of them blew up including Mike McGuiness's bike and he is no novice and neither are his backers & tuners.

Other tuned bikes are used in Superbike & super stock classes and they are rumoured to spend 100G's a year for racing . How much of that is like transport / hotel / eatin not sure but even if that was as much as 50% that is some bill just to ride 30 mile an hour faster on road surfaces not designed for it !!!


A spirited ride against an R1 yeilded speeds that despite my long years experience had me at the edge of my comfort zone and that was on a relatively new surface and passably straight sections damned if I want to go 50% faster than that

There's also the issue of reliability. Production bikes have to be able to do so many hours on the rev limiter with out grenading unlike motogp bikes. If you want a bike with that much hp that is street legal look at the Ducati Desmosedici rr .
