Chattering clutch plates?
Just figured Id post up here to see your opinions before I take the bike apart again for the 30th time this season. Usually I have my ipod on while riding but the other day I took the bike around the block without head phones and noticed a weird chattering. It wasnt til I pulled over and inspected the bike did I realize the chatter happens on the clutch side of the engine only when the clutch lever is pulled. Would the clutch boss bolts just need tightening? Did the clutch around a year and a half ago and replaced the boss, springs, plates, and bolts. Didnt use locktight which might be a reason they let loose if that is the problem. Simple open and tighten or could this be something else all together?

prob 1 way to know. open it up and look man. There is the normal fzr light chatter /knock when the clutch lever is NOT pulled but I think you would probably be best to open it up and look. may be the oz of prevention worth the pound of cure ya know. good luck
Re: Chattering clutch plates?
i'm not entirely sure it matters on these bikes but sometimes clutches will chatter if the steels are installed in the wrong direction. the steels should have a machined/flad side and on the other the edges will be rounded off. all of the plates should be facing the same direction (i think on my bike the rounded edges were facing the bike but i'm not for sure).
again, this may help you or it may have nothing to do with your problem but i like to check these easy things first! good luck man.

Definitely open it up and check. If one of the bolts has backed out it could be rubbing on the inside of the cover and making a whole bunch of metal shavings. Suffice it to say, this is a bad thing.

Lay the bike on its left side and open the clutch up, most chattering is caused by worn cork tabs flapping in a worn (jagged edged clutch basket), as said else where stells not being all the same way round ie all sharp edges NOT in one direction. Metal plates not being balanced out by even spacing of the d pieces on the out side.Luke-a-Tron wrote:Definitely open it up and check. It is possible it is the spring(s) being loose being too short thro wear as well had that happen on an FZ where the owner got cheap and used a half a Barnett set BUT did not check the originals all being within tolerance ! for the other half set
It is possible the clutch bolts have come loose BUT that would show up as a sticky clutch
Best look and loose a little time rather say bugger and ride it till it breaks something expensive !!!!!
