Hi,
I hate to tell you this but NOTHING will keep your bike safe from a determined thief !!!

All any of us can do is to slow the bast*rd down I have mine with a (insurance approved) chain to a concrete post with a 120dB alarm lock on it PLUS two disc locks with built in sirens. I have an immobiliser locking system fitted plus all of Yamahas "anti-theft" devices working on the bike.

In real terms that really means that the chain has to be ground through and the bike lifted into a van that is suitably padded to dampen the noise of the disc locks then all they have to do is take it away and work on the disc locks at their leisure etc.

I want to add that good relationship with your neighbors goes a long way. Barring that, if your complex has any kind of security office/staff-get to know them...maybe even 'bribe' them a little (bar-b-queing? give em a burger or two...case of beer or a bottle on holidays)

When I was a condo/carport rider I would always park sideways at the front of the stall (in front of my truck) and chain to the uprights like you said, with tempered chain and a Discus lock http://store.uhaul.com/product_detail.aspx?id=3498.

Glad I don't have to live with that around here...I work on most of the local cops' Harleys, and 'they' know it ('they' being the local criminal element)

Then get a D lock that goes through hoop and wheel. The good ones have magnetic key lock so they can be picked.
When your bike wheel comes up to plate and gets locked its near imposible to cut away without grinder.
Mossy,
The Ozie thieves must be well behind 6the times techwise , the ones over hear have a crew of three tops. The driver and two crew. As they pull up they fire up a generator in the van open back doors jump out with a big angle grinder and in less than one minute are thro the D lock and and within one minute the bike is lifted into the van and on its way to be scrapped

This scenario took place on a main road in the center of the city of london at a well known bike parking area no one noticed / cared they would have gotten away clean if a sharp eyed passer by had not called the cops and given them the van number, They were caught on CCTV footage but even that did not raise any suspicions @ the time !!!!!!!!!

Im a kiwi George.
The worst that would happen here is someone would take tha bike and bring it back the next day with a full tank and might tune it for you.
I was just wondering now i have van for race bike about loading it the night before.
Someone might steel the van to get the bike. Its already loaded and ready.

Well guys i know this aint nothing just felt like showin u all how i TAME MY BEAST ..NOT !!!
I could not stand driving 25 miles each way just to pick up my bike so i brang it to my condo park it up to the car port ..
I have some shitty steel wire cables , and a chain , a disk lock with crappy alarm. a Krypotnite disk lock<probably the best of my security detail> and a cheap jap alarm that is so sensitive the wind blows oppisite direction it will go off.. BTW my new Yoshimura TRS tri-oval slip-on . But just wanted to show you all what the hell i go through every night and every morning .. But i feel if this will deter them 1-2 minutes instead of just rolling it away in time for me to wake up and run out with my CZ 40 CaL ..It's enough for now

So what kind of alarms do you all use on your bikes? I'm lucky enough to be able to store my bike in my garage for the time being, so I don't need to worry quite so much about overnight storage, but I would love to be able to ride my bike to work and that isn't happening with the current set-up. That set-up being absolutely nothing, of course, I bet you could just jam a screwdriver in the key slot, and you'd be set!

Not trying to hijack the thread or anything :whistle , just curious what you guys use in similar situations. Luckily, the garage at my work has a spot for parking bicycles that looks pretty sturdy, so I might be able to rig up something that could work there... but I would really hope that some sort of arlarm/wheel lock would do the trick on its own...

Any thoughts?

i have some cheap alarm from hong kong that a company sent me when they messed up an order so this was to make it better but its a crappy one ... there one called scorpio I900 .. pretty cool .. found one for a couple hundred on the forum but he doesnt have paypal so i dont trust sending a check in the mail to a guy who only has 3 posts on the forum ..

that alarm i mentioned is supposed to be top of line ... proximity sensors , anti theft or hijack - 2 way pager back up battery , kick ass but again if somone wants it bad enough they will get it no matter what ..

Truth, I know that if I make rides to work the norm I'll have to pay for some real insurance on the thing. For now I want to get some sort of alarm, and for back up I'll use the shiny 06 R6 that parks in the garage... Who would want my bike when that thing is sitting right next to it? :grinnod:

The big problem is that I just don't want to spend $400 on an alarm system. I only paid $2k for the bike, seems like a waste. I looked at that alarm before I think, looks like its got it all, but it's about twice what I was planning on spending... Maybe I'm dreaming if I hope to have a secure alarm and only pay $100-$200 for it...

I have a Xena one on my bike, the xz1. http://www.xenasecurity.com/product/mot ... m/showall/

It seems to be built pretty sturdy, and man is it LOUD. It hurts your ears if it goes off while you're trying to unlock it, which happens to me a lot cause it's really sensitive to movement.

I think I spent $80 or so on it last year and I'd recommend it to anyone.

As for the cables, all I can add is that a good hardened chain is probably your best bet. Hardened chain is a lot more expensive, but it takes WAY longer to get through with a saw/grinder. Cables can't really be hardened because they need to remain flexible.

for sure bro , i would feel safer leavin it at your place actually more then my familys .. becuase at my family's i have a "just turned 20 yr old" little brother who itching to ride the R1 but was to scared to jump on the FizR . Afraid he'll try to be like his ghetto thug buddies and Hot Wire it just to ride it .

Too bad u aint in Farmington though .. that would be tits man .. ill get with you one day though for sure ... Today there is somthing called blessing of bikes in Detroit Telegraph and West Chicago Rd ... starts at 10 am was thinkin about going to it but it looks like where in for 30% showers T-storms and 30-40 mph winds .. Not a good day to ride with a effd up from tire .....

When my bike is at my house(when its not snowing) its chained to the support post of my 3 sided lean-to/shed thingie inside a 6' fence with padlocks and bars on all the gates and at least 2 security cameras looking directly at it and youd have to pass 3 more coming from any direction except over the fence from another neighbors yard. Add on top of that that it doesnt run and its a pretty secure bike. Plus the fact that my dogs BIG ASS EARS will hear it the moment anyone tries to open any of the gates and soounds very fierce, even if she is a pussy. Theres also motion lights and the cameras are infrared. My house is less than 1000sf but I have more security than most businesses. And whenever I can afford it, hopefully later this summer, Im going to either buy or build a heavy duty shed to store things. Its not easy to store things at my house, I dont even have a driveway, just alley access to my backyard which isnt much bigger than a driveway.

Personally, I am more concerned about security once its out and about. I need to get a disc lock for sure and an alarm isnt a bad idea, but it still doesnt put me at ease. Especially considering it would only take 2 people to pick it up and put it in a truck bed whether it rolls or not. I also have a screw on gas cap thats nice and pretty, but I think im going to swap it out for a stock locking cap too. If I caught someone trying to jack my bike or Jeep, I cant guarantee there would not be shots fired.

Im kinda bothered though by where my bike is currently. My best friend let me keep it in his garage over the winter, but last time i stopped by his 5 year old sone was sitting on it cranking the throttle when I rolled up and no one else was around, except the stupid ass dog who was running circles around it.

I think once I finish my new axles for my jeep and have the sapce clear, Im going to move my bike into my kitchen. yes Im building axles in my kitchen. I dont use it, so long as the fride is clear. Hey Im a single 25yo male and live alone. I dont cook :D

I'm at an apartment complex and my plan was to chain it to the lamp post in the middle of the lot and keep it under a cover with full insurance just in case
