Rode my new FZR for the first time today!

Post by Shocka311 »

So i whent and picked up my FZR today and rode for like 4 hours. Holy shit I'm not used to the position of a sport bike, It wore me the hell out. My neck is super sore from looking up. I'm sure I'll get used to it quick enough. I do have a few questions after riding it though. I don't know enough about older bikes to know whether there are just old bike rattles or whether the noises I hear are something to worry about. When I am in 1st, starting off of a dead stop, it just sounds rattley and rough. Then when I am slowing down and shifting down when I get into first and have the clutch in as I'm slowing down something just sounds noisier that when I have the clutch in in other gears. The other thing I noticed several times is the bike would seem to down shift. It seemed as I was coming to a stop or slowing down, I would hit the shifter down but it didn't feel like it had shifted and when I went to accelerate again i was still in a very high gear. I'm not really sure what I did to get it to shift again, but after I let the clutch out and pulled it back in it started shifting again. The guy I bought it from said the clutch was just replaced cause the other one blew out. So hopefully you'll give me some good news and not tell me I just bought a bike with a bad clutch or tranny, but I'm prepared for the worst. I know they usually have problems with 2nd gear but 2nd seems fine. 1st seems a bit rough and there were possibly som issues downshifting in high gears. I'll have to ride it a bit more to be sure and see if the downshift problem happens more.

Since your in general discussion you will need to tell us which model you have. Some have hydrolic clutch and the smaller bikes dont.
Its possible its not disengaging the fibre from plates when the clutch is pulled in fully.New fibres without adjustments may be the reason.
Also possible the new fibres were not soaked in oil before install.Could also be the steels were not all installed the same dirrection.Sharp outer edge all in or all out if he did it himself. You could start buy removing clutch cover and inspecting clutch and the assy.Order yourself a fresh clutch gasket first as the old one can tear or could have been gued in by previous owner. There will be some on ebay and they are cheep.

Sorry, forgot to say its a 1990 600. I was thinking it could be the chain cause it looks like it could use a lube. I'll be doin that today. I'll ride it some more today and get an update with some pics.

So I realized my oil is much more full than it should be. In the glass the lvl is almost to the top and as I understand it should be only halfway. Could this be causing some of the seemingly rough shifts and such?

I think that is what was causing it to shift rough. Some of the oil has leaked out and its shifting much better now. I'll do the gaskets this weekend and put new oil in and such. Supposed to rain for a week here so no riding for me anyway.
