Oil Change Question

I am changing the oil my Fzr and I picked up a gallon jug of RP oil because it was on sale and got a k&n filter for it. Since the oil is in a gallon jug its of course hard to judge how much oil you have put in the bike. So my question is this how far up the sight glass should the oil be? Thanks for any and all help.

I am fairly certain your window is similar to the FZR1000 window. Your oil level should be between the maximum and minimum marks. So, look through the window with the bike straight up and if the level is halfway you are good to go. By the way who has Royal Purple oil on sale?

I got it in the managers special section at Oreilys I saved about $3.50 off of the galon. They also had some of the royal purple ice I think it was called similar to water wetter in that section. So since I am about to flush/fill the coolant I think I will go back and get some of that as well. Thanks for the info on the sight glass! But for the record my window doesnt have any marks I can see so maybe I will have to clean the road grime off a little more so I can see them.

You are right they don't have "marks" like your typical auto dipstick. What you should see is a circle, and inside that circle you should have a dark section with a "U" shape notch that is see through. Simply put once you start adding oil, assuming the bike is straight you will see the oil level appear in that "U". The oil level should be roughly halfway between the bottom and top of the "U" section. My Genesis holds 3.8US qt total and the Thundercat holds 3.7US qt

I know it doesnt have marks I was just joking thats why I put the in there . I know it was a bad joke and hard to pick up on while on the net. But really thanks for the tip I know know what the level should be in the window and that was a big help. I really need to get my hands on a owners manual since the bike will be with me for a while. Any one know if Yamaha sells them still?

Yamaha will sell you anything for the FZR - for a price. Check eBay for a Yamaha Service Manual. I got mine used for $20 shipped.

You can also pick up a Haynes Manual on there. They're decent too.

I just changed my oil today with Rotella T Synthetic 5w-40. Man it is nicer than the Yamalube I had been using. The main thing I noticed was the smoother idle and shifting. I was worried about the possibility of the clutch slipping, but it works just fine.

One thing is, My 600 only take around 3qts of oil. Anymore and it would have way to much, 3 will take you to the maximum oil dot and thats from a dripped dry oil pan.

I called the dealer and they told me that some thing like 2.3 quarts is what I wanted to get into the bike.

Sounds about right. I looked at what I used and it was right at 2.5qts.
