Headlight

Post by Lorenzai »

I went for a late night ride last night and now tonight. I have a 1992 FZR 600 with the single headlight. I think this bike NEEDS a HID conversion. The low beams are really mediocre at best and the high is completely useless. Its like the high beam is aimed at the sky or something. I run HB4/9006 HIDs in my car with fantastic results from a company called Sportiva. I am thinking about buying a 9003 kit for the bike. I can get it in bi xenon so that it works correctly with the stock setup, and its 35 watts so it pulls less wattage than the stock headlight does. Good idea? Bad idea?

You could:
- Buy a decent set of halogen lightbulbs (does it have one or two lightbulbs?), I got decent Osram Nightbreaker bulbs last year.
- Take a look at the glass, lens and reflector when the bulbs are out - is it dusty? Clean it with very mildly soapy water, possibly a soft microfiber cloth (not when dry!) and compressed air.
- Adjust the lights (esp. if you say the high beam is aimed too high) - this makes a big difference.

Stock lights were excellent in the bikes made for Germany. Take a look at the wiring diagram and replicate the setup for Germany. Main thing - relays to avoid voltage drops in aging switches and cabling.

1992 has the single headlight. Its the one that uses the same bulb for both high beam and low beam. That's why I'm confused about aiming the headlight. First off, I don't see any adjusters for the headlight. Since it utilizes the same bulb for both high and low, how is it that the low beam is aimed perfectly but the high beam is way out of whack? Secondly, my light tends to flicker / bounce a LOT while riding, which is bad and makes me worry I will dazzle oncoming cagers. Is that a product of the front suspension being soft on these bikes? I checked the headlight itself as well as how the bulb is seated and it seems solid to me.

The schematic shows 2 adjuster nuts.

Horizontal and vertical adjustment WILL be possible.

I am unfamiliar with the single headlight units specifically.

Look for two 10mm head bolts that have X for a X head screwdriver in the centre.

You need to set the full/main beam correctly.....the dip pattern will or should follow the correct pattern.

However this must depend if the correct bulb is fitted.......some countries drive on the wrong side of the road and bulbs are fitted that dip to that side.

It may be possible that this is the case.......I do not believe the trapezoid headlamped variant of the FZR 600 is
particularly common.....most were twin round lamp units.

I had to aim the headlight way down. It took several trial and error runs before I got it where it should be but it's atleast acceptable now. One of the drawbacks of having the single headlight model is that since the bulb is both low and high, you have to compromise a bit on how you aim your headlight. To get good distance out of your low beams, you have to adjust the light up. The problem being if you adjust it even a little too far your high beams become just about useless. I've got it about as good as I can get it now but I still can't get rid of the bouncy headlight. I don't know how your dual headlight setups are, but the only thing holding my bulb in is basically a glorified paperclip. I see other bikes around here that have bouncy headlights as well so I guess it might be something I just have to suck it up and deal with.
