That's the Starter Cover, aka the 'Peanut Cover', well known and reviled as the single most likely component to bring your ride to a halt in the event of a crash. Made from case-hardened cheese and Melba toast crumbs, it is notorious for dumping the entire contents of your crankcase onto the tarmac beside you as a result of a gentle low-side that otherwise barely scratched your fairings. People have actually smashed through the cover in a zero-speed tip-over in the driveway. They are actually rather rare because of this.
If that's your cover in the pic, and it's still oil-tight, I would suggest repairing it - the damage is in a non-structural location, and is purely cosmetic. Sand the paint off and embedded gravel out, then lightly smear JB Weld onto it until the surface is gouge-free. At that point, sand it smooth and repaint.
If you're after a new one that will outlast the bike, get a billet race cover from Niagara Race Crafters (NRC). The same part is used from '89-99. Looking at the part numbers for the covers and gaskets, I would THINK that the 400 and 600 covers are interchangeable, but I'll await confirmation from someone who knows for sure. The YZF600 peanut cover *IS* interchangeable with the FZR600.
Edit - 30 more seconds with Google, and yes - FZR400 starter covers are interchangeable with the 600.
that pic is of mine.lucky for me it took a spill a while back and held oil....that is until someone backed into the bike and it fell on that spot.cracked.and spewed all the oil out...i dont think any of the metal is in the crankcase..sure hope not.but thanks for all the input!
I can get pictures tomorrow but I have a few I'd let go. 1 Brand new NRC, 2 Almost new Factory Pro covers, and an unidentified, made for a guys racing a long time ago, billet cover. Send me a PM if you're interested.
