1990 FZR 1000 HELP!!!!!!!

Hey all, im a noob to this site so bear with me. Picked up a 1990 FZR 1000 EXUP 25,xxx miles, jardine pipe, barnett clutches are the main upgrades....for now......Bike has a NEW CDI box and NEW battery. The issue is this. The bike is a bitch to start, always needs a boost pack to finally get it to fire, Needs FULL choke and throttle FULLY twisted to even attempt to fire. When it does eventually fire, it acts as if its grounding out??? Only runs IF I keep throttle fully twisted, choke on or off doesnt matter either. ONLY runs at 1k rpm's though! Some times it smooths out, seems like there is a wire short up front(fuel selector switch forward) since sometimes I can grab a handfull of wires and it straightens out? When the bike finally smartens up and runs it runs PERFECT! Tons of power, idles right @ 950 rpm's. Here is ANOTHER catch though. If the bike sits for 3 hours or longer, once again its a bitch to start. Anything under that, it'll start with no choke, just giving it a little gas. Ive checked the pickup coil, 154k ohms, fuel pump works fine, everything works as it should, minus the headlight and cooling fan which are on seperate toggle switches? Side stand switch is also unplugged and looped back into itself, as I was told this was how to bypass it. Ive put almost 200 miles on the bike in less than 2 weeks. Like I said, when I DO get it to run, its perfect. Bike also has new plugs in it too. Carbs have also been cleaned a while back. No smoke when running great. Bike seems to run only on 2 cylinders or something when it runs like poop. PLEASE help!

The FZRs were/are infamous for hard cold starts due to tight valves. The fact that it runs great once you you finally get it started is completely typical.

It's time to check and adjust the valve clearances. This can be done in the driveway, with the engine still in the frame.

Hey DONTZ125, thanks for the advice. Just to make sure though, when I am cranking it, it smells alot like it floods due to trying and trying, sometimes it catches a little bit, other times it backfires like....well nothing Ill hear again since its makes me half deaf! It gets fuel, im sure of it, spark, ive seen it, blueish/whiteish, and ive driven it! Whats the best way to do this valve adjustment? It does seem like a wire at times thats shorting because if I grab the mentioned wires, sometimes(maybe a coincidence) it'll catch, fire up, die then cranking and cranking I can get it to run WOT at 1k rpms. Any pics or diagrams you have that might help, let me know. Thanks for the advice! Im all ears.

You could ALSO try out the Ford Escort ignition coils if you get tired of playing around with it. I can fire my bike right up in the cold with NO choke :P Great way to NOT kill your battery.
