Oil usage and new rear shock???

I hope you guys can help...
My 1994 1000EXUP RU has about 48,000 miles on it and does use a fair bit of oil. Over 1000 miles has used about 1 litre of oil. I know these bikes do use a bit but is that sort of consuption usual?
In addition my rear shock is getting on a bit with nearly 50K of use on it, has anyone got an idea of a reasonably priced shock or one that will bolt on from another bike like a busa or R1?
The bike didn't cost alot (ie, £700) so spending £500 on a brand new Ohlins or even £300 on a Hagon really isnt an option!
Any help would be appreciated.
cheers!

My first engine used a sh!te load of oil too. What oil are you using? Some say using mineral oil is the way to go as it helps the rings seal.
The engine I have now is a 1040 and the pistons and rings have about 6000 miles on them, no excessive oil use at all now. In this engine I use semi-synth. I'd try the mineral oil for a 1000miles and see if it helps, if not it's probably overhaul time or just put up with it.
Re: The rear shock. You are in the UK so if you search for Brooke Suspension give them a call. They should be able to (I am awaiting a reply) refurb your existing shock for around £100.00. They have an eBay ad too. Not many other shocks are the same length as the exup's shock. You could find a similar length shock then mess with different length dog bones I suppose. Or just keep your eye out for a second hand low miles ebay special.

cheers,
i use semi-synth at the mo as per recomendation from my local bike bloke. at least by permanantly checking and topping up my oil it means the bike allways got fresh oil in it!
a shock refurb is somthing ive looked into but mine is in quite a state. the springs paint has flaked in most places and is a bit rusty! all the second hand ones ive seen are in similar condition so it feels like im lobbing money at something no better than what i already have.
i've got three different lenths of dog bones as it is as i have played with the ride hight i bit and alot of newer shocks have built in ridehight adjusters so prehaps if i got a shock with preload/damping and ride height adustment of a similar length it may fit ok.
not sure though. will have to ponder and do some more homework i suspect.

If you PM me your email address I can send you a list of loads of different shock lengths/stroke etc.

Your oil burning problem could be valve stem oil seal related, piston rings or even head gasket. Too make sure it is the head gasket, do you have blue smoke coming from the exhaust and on the bottom of your oil filler cap, is there a creamy substance on there? if none of these its not likely your head gasket. Most likely its your valve stem seals.
As far as shocks go, is it leaking oil? Does the rear bounce a few times? If none on these and if just looks nasty, unless you want a shiney one i wouldn't worry, you could just take if off and paint it?

hi,
not sure about a 1K fzr but the 600 guys have done alot of write ups on rearend shock swaps and there is stuff in the Wiki too.

heres a list of alternative shock lengths thats been flying around our site for some time. You may find something compatible out of this lot

That's all a great help and very much appreciated, thankyou all.
i know my head gaskets not gone at least as there is no mayo round the oil cap! one saving grace thats for sure!!
the bike does smoke a bit on start up but that is white and clears when the engine is warm.
i have been told when i'm out on ride with some mates that when i give it the beans there is a bit of blue smoke under heavy accelaration but i wonder how much of that is burnt old oil in the wadding of the end can as that scorpion has been on the bike for 10 years (i'm repacking it shortly as im sure it past it best anyway).
it's all the fun of owning an 18 year old bike!!

just out curiosity ive seen a shock adapter for a 2006> r6 rear shock. basicaly the r6 shock is 30mm shorter than a 1000exup unit and this compensates. apparently its a 30 min job to fit the whole lot and get a far newer and more adjustable rear end.
has anyone tried this? link below.

Hi C,
That looks substantially built and looks that it could do the business for you at least as far as the engineering concept part goes.@ 40 quid it is not cheap but having it custom made would be minimum of 80 quid so yes what the heck give it a try. Just be sure that the torque values for the bolts are met !
With my Site Directors hat on do me a favour if you go this route WRITE it up for the WIKI
( or send me pictures and a brief description of what each shows at what stage of work Plus your thoughts on the suppliers service level would be nice. if you do not fancy the WIKI edit bit I will do it for you )
Thanks
Y-Geo.

If i do do this i will certainly write it up as i think it may be a usefull bit of knowledge (budget is as always at this time of year is tight) but it's something that will need doing at some point.
With a cost of around £150 all in with a far newer multi adjustable shock in place, would be rude not to try!!!
Lets face it, the old exups are a dying breed so anything to keep 'em alive 'n kicking has got to be worth it.

my only comcern about using the R6 shock is that the spring weight may not be up to the task. The R1 spring may be more suitable especially when you consider the weight difference of the R1 to the Exup1000

Paul,
true but at this point he would be guessing about the ride quality anyway . Sit on it, ride it, he will know which way & probably a better guess as to what will work . Unless of course he knows where a good suspension guy hides to ask that is:-}
