93 FZR 1000 Engine Knocking

I was out riding this weekend and an engine knocking appeared out of no where.
Sounds like its in the head with a consistant knocking but when you give it gas it sounds like several moving parts clanking around in there.
Someone told me to take the valve covers off and check clearances.
If I just go ahead and take the head off, will it be apparent if the problem is in the head or in the block?
Thanks,
SL

No, not yet.
Guess I may as well as I will be removing the valve covers anyways.
Thing is, the heads are going to have to come off anyways because something inside the engine somewhere is broken.
I'm hoping it turns out to be an issue where all I have to do is get the heads reworked.
Anyone care to see a video clip where you can hear the noise?

SL,
I would say that anything that helps those of us not there, to help you with diagnosis is always welcome.

Here it is riding season and I haven't done anything with this.
I guess I need to scrap this ol bike....?
Totally sad.....
You guys have no idea how clean this bike is.
Yoshimura full exhaust, brand new tires with 500 miles on them tops!
Everywhere I go I get compliments and people that don't know anything about bikes think it's a 2009 or 2010 model (lol)

Don't scrap it
Lets hear that video clip and get it fixed.. It may be something really simple. If not slot another engine in, plenty for sale lately.

You better take a look at the bottom end. Rods & crank journals. Bad news 'cause the engine needs to come apart, if that is it.
