Starter Faux Pas

The wife wouldnt start today for work, had to bump her down the street.
When i hit the starter button, while in netural, stand up and clutch in (just a habbit) the lights all illuminate\go out as normal and she just clicks once and does not turn over.
The click does not come from the starter, it comes from a wee metal round yoke under the seat which i have duley beat while hitting the starter button but with no joy. I just like to beat stuff when it dont work, fixes a lot of things i find!
I rekon this would be the starter relay but i take a look at the image below (found on google). This is what is clicking...
If i hold this round metal device while hitting the button i can actually feel it click, its a fair wee thump.
All fuses check out fine.
Question Time.
How do i test to see if it is the starter solenoid that is bucked, the starter or the relay itself. Bike started fine on the bump and ran to work fine, i.e. solenoid not engaged
Any help appreciated.
P.S.
FZR600 plastics fot sale along with an engine with a piston rod sticking through the base of the barrel (engine still ran on 3 cylinders ha ha!) and a few other bits. Just ask.
