Starter Faux Pas

The wife wouldnt start today for work, had to bump her down the street.

When i hit the starter button, while in netural, stand up and clutch in (just a habbit) the lights all illuminate\go out as normal and she just clicks once and does not turn over.

The click does not come from the starter, it comes from a wee metal round yoke under the seat which i have duley beat while hitting the starter button but with no joy. I just like to beat stuff when it dont work, fixes a lot of things i find!

I rekon this would be the starter relay but i take a look at the image below (found on google). This is what is clicking...

Image

If i hold this round metal device while hitting the button i can actually feel it click, its a fair wee thump.

All fuses check out fine.

Question Time.

How do i test to see if it is the starter solenoid that is bucked, the starter or the relay itself. Bike started fine on the bump and ran to work fine, i.e. solenoid not engaged

Any help appreciated.

P.S.

FZR600 plastics fot sale along with an engine with a piston rod sticking through the base of the barrel (engine still ran on 3 cylinders ha ha!) and a few other bits. Just ask.

sounds to me like a typical FZR Voltage Regulator going bad. The starter and relay dont go out to often on these bikes, but when the battery is too low it will display these symptoms, and the VR going bad will cause the battery to either overcharge and die, or undercharge.

Have you tried booster leads to up the voltage.

If it starts you'll know its the battery on its last legs or its not getting charged as it should be

The 1000s have automotive-style field-control VRRs, not the shunt-style VRRs of the smaller bikes, and are far less prone to failure. It does sound like your battery is simply flat. Check voltage across the battery terminals.

If you boost from a car / truck, the boosting vehicle should be OFF. This prevents almost-certain damage to the bike's VRR, and possible damage to the car's brain box.
