cam chain seems too tight to remove cam shafts..??

Post by FZRFZRFZR »

alright chaps, in the middle of checking and adjusting valves..

undone all the cam shaft caps.. (1 and 4 on the inlet were upside down and in the place... i.e. 1 was upside down where the 4 should be and vise versa?)

some previous person in a hurry perhaps?

Anyway, with the cam caps all off, the cam chain doesn't have enough slack to clear it off the sprockets.... i have removed the cam chain tensioner already???

any thoughts??

i was trying to cable tie the sprockets to the chain as a little trick to keep the timing dead on and not have to worry about it later, you are supposed to be able to roll the cam shafts out of the way, one at a time to access the lifters... there is no chance here.

even with forgeting the cable ties and just trying to manouver the cam shafts out the cam chain seems too tight..?? :headscratch: :headscratch: :headscratch:

haynes just says "remove the cam shafts from the cam chain, make sure you dont let it go too slack or drop inside the engine.."

Yeah, you can't just take the tensioner assy off teh cylinder block. You need to remove the guides as well....there is one that moves that is directly actuated by the tensioner, plus the one along the front (exhaust side) of the cam chain run.

You then roll the intake cam in the centerline of the head and pull it out.

I kinda prefer removing the cam sprocket bolts and leaving the sprockets zip tied to the cam chain-this is an especially easy shortcut with stock (unslotted) cam sprockets.
