Hi all - got an 89 100oo today as a project. most of the loom is either missing or in a box (and the colis are missing
Has anybody got and pics of where the coils are located and how they are wired in to the loom - cheers

I'm not 100% positive on the '89 1k, but here is the normal break down.
With the tank and air box off, the wire harness sits on the left hand side of the bike. The wires for the coils are in positions so that the first coil is on the left and the right coil extends to the other side of the bike. There should only be 3 colors for the 4 wires needed to operate the coils. 1 wire Orange, 1 wire Gray and 2 wires red with something else (gray, white or black). The grouping should be orange with one of the red/alternate color wires on the left and gray with one of the red/alternate color wires on the right. The orange wire goes to cylinder #1 and the corresponding red/alternate goes to cylinder #4. On the other side, the gray wire goes to cylinder #2 and its corresponding red/alternate goes to cylinder #3. As far as the coil is concerned, it shouldn't matter what goes where. Just make sure that what ever side of the coil the orange wire plugs into that the plug on that side of the coil goes to cylinder #1 and so on.
Hope this helps, and I'm sure if I got something mixed up that someone will be along to correct it.

I have no knowledge of the 1K, But I do know how coils work!
They have primary windings, and secondary windings. The primary windings whilst switched on, charge the secondary windings. The TCI/ECU or whatever switch's off the primary windings VIA the LT negative wires, Hence the secondary winding dump their charge, and the plugs fire.
The Orange wire (LT negative) DOES NOT GO to cylinder #1, nor does the Gray wire (LT negative) go to cylinder #2, They connect to the TCI not the plugs!!!
The FZR utilises waste spark. I.E. #1 & #4 plugs spark Simultaneously as do #2 & #3. The Red/White wires are the LT positives, on both coils. Orange & Grey wires (if the 1K wiring is the same as the 600) are merely the coil primary windings negative. THEY connect to the TCI/ECU, nowhere else, and they certainly don't connect to any cylinder nor spark plug!
The coil primary windings positive feeds (Red/White) fed VIA the ignition fuse, power the coils, the Orange Grey Wires connected to the TCI (NOT THE PLUGS) the TCI switches off the primary windings!
THE
ORANGE AND
GREY WIRES DO NOT CONNECT TO any of THE PLUGS

Not shit, really. I was commenting on the order the wires plug into the coils for the correct firing order. Not all bikes have wire connectors that are color coded so that they only connect one way like the FZR600 does. A lot require the individual wires to be plugged in the coils in a corresponding order so that they go to a specific coil plug.

Guys, unclench.
CAD - One R/W and the Orange goes to the 1-4 coil; the other R/W and the Grey goes to the 2-3 coil. The order of which wire is on which pin isn't really relevant. You described a 4-channel arrangement, which could lead to confusion on others' parts.
Mawler - you're very knowledgeable, but seriously - switch to decaf. Your answer was entirely correct, but far too angry. Why?

True, it really doesn't matter. Or I should say it shouldn't matter being a wasted spark set up. Both Red/alternate color wires fire at the same time as the time as the wire it is paired with. It's just weird though that may times it doesn't seem to work like that. I know that I've switched the plug wires before and it didn't work. Maybe it was just that bike.
Good call though.

You're missing the point - with the FZRs, when the ignition switch is on the R/? wire is ALWAYS on, ALWAYS connected to +12v. It's the Grey or Orange grounding wire, connected to the TCI, that switches on and off.

The US 89 1k wiring diagram is in the WIKI (just found it)
