Hi guys first post!

Anyways i have a question. I just got a 97' Thunderace 1000, and from what ive heard, it has the same engine as the newer fzr 1000. Ok my question is what oil do you guys typically use and also what is the oil capacity, also ive heard these engines drink oil?

Thanks

It's definitely NOT like the FZR1000 engine-similar but not like. It's closer in kin to the YZF750 actually. You're going to get a WIDE variety of the answers regarding the oil. I run Casttol 4T motorcycle oil in my 1000. I wanna say it's 10w30 but i can't remember at the moment. I haven't had much of an issue though. Should take about 2.5 to 3 quarts. They don't drink oil but it may burn a little.

I exclusively use Rotella T 15w40 conventional oil-in the white jug.

My motor burns a little oil!

ThunderAce's are a bastardaztion of the yzf750 & fzr1000. Seems like early model cylinder blocks suffered from heat distortion until yamaha made better sleeves. This causes the increase in oil consumption that they (fzr & yzf) are known for. So its not excessive wear that causes it, its just normal.

as a reference:
15 40 for oil, im not an oil fanboy, as long as the clutch dont slip... as for all wet clutch bikes, look for the "energy conservation" label and avoid it.
25000 miles on the clock, burns about 1/2 quart per 600 miles. but valve seals arent the best ether.
