Can't shift while engine runs??

I can shift fine with the engine off... but when the engine is on the only way I can shift is if I reach down & yank/push on the lever with my hand. I am able to let the clutch slip out without the bike moving... so I would think the clutch is fully disengaged... but what wrong? How do I fix this?

Mine does this, too. My clutch pushrod is broken in half, waiting on a new one to arrive to see if that's all it is. You can take your sprocket cover off and pull your pushrod out to check it, unless someone else has a better idea........

I've heard this isn't unusual on the fzrs

sounds like the clutch is draging either the plates and fibers are stuck together or like shigs said the pushrod is damaged usually the ball bearing crushes or welds to an end due to holding it in to long or lack of lubrication. or might just need to adjust it at the sprocket cover

That's a confusing post imo

I can shift fine with the engine off... << that's unusual, can you locate all gears, or does it appear that you can?

but when the engine is on the only way I can shift is if I reach down & yank/push on the lever with my hand. << does the bike lurch forward? (a dragging clutch)

I am able to let the clutch slip out without the bike moving... << when the bike is (or appears to be in gear) your saying with the clutch lever released the bike doesn't move forward?

so I would think the clutch is fully disengaged... << you mean the clutch is permanently fully disengaged? (as if the clutch lever is pulled/depressed)

I had the same problem with my bike when I got it. Was really hard to shift, couldnt get it to go into neutral. An oil change helped a bit, but I also noticed the clutch lever was a very soft pull and engaged really early. I bled the clutch out, there was air in the system, shifting problems and neutral problem went away. So the cause was a clutch that was partially engaged making it hard to shift and get into neutral. There is a bleed valve on your slave cylinder on the left side of your bike in the area of the sprocket cover, just bleed your clutch from there, you will know if there is air in it and the clutch lever feel will improve dramtically once bled. I would also take a look at your clutch plates, if your clutch has been dragging you may need to replace your clutch, I had to with mine.
