Camshaft Timing Help, PLEASE!

The camshafts were out of my FZR1000 Yamaha for some time. The bike got moved... . If I but the timing rotor will that actually tell me where to rotate the crankshaft to, or will I still have to align the mark through the inspection hole? The only thing I can think of is that the bottom end is 180 degrees out, cause it wont crank. I'm having a tough time aligning the mark on the crank through that itty bitty hole... The cams were snugged with the transmission in neutral, so the valves should be ok. The timing rotor at the local Yamaha dealer sells it for the list price of $120, and I'd pay it, if I'm sure that that will actualy allow me to put the cranshaft in the proper place to install the cams with the dots up. The manual makes me think the timing tool is just a piece of plastic to hold it in place. Too late for that! Any advice / help would be appriciated!
