i recently picked up a 91 fzr 1000 with 30 thousand miles on it and its making a ratiling noise at idle . now i have noticed when i start the bike it makes the same noise as it cranks over and some times a loud clunk that stops the starter . other than that it runs great. so my question is could it b the starter clutch i think is what its called? i have a haynes manuel and dont really know what to look for... thanks

The rattle is probably the exup valve in the header (unless you have non stock headers). A good "grease up" of it's moving parts will cure that.

The motor is engineered to utilize the exup valve. So yes, changing the header WILL change the powerband. It'll have almost no power until 4000 rpm. I suggest just servicing the valve (there's an acces panel on the left of the header. you might see 2 cables going to it) with some grease and you'll be good.
