Hi my 89 FZR 1000 has developed a miss. How do I get to the plugs?
Had the tank off but it looks like the wrong way.
Anny help would be great

Fairings have to come off and the radiator moved out of the way. If the plugs in there are NGK you'll need an 18mm socket as they are too big for a standard spark plug socket.

Wow...thanks. Can't say that I know all but I try to stay informed.

Soaringman, I just thought of something else. This may not be the issue in your case but it's something to keep in mind. The reserve (or lack there of-depending how you look at it) if tripped, will also cause the bike to miss. That's how the bike will tell you you're low on fuel. It could possibly be a faulty reserve switch but I'm really just guessing as they don't tend to go bad.

OK, so I took the fairings off, moved the radiator out of the way.
Took all the leads off the plugs, tried testing them with mixed results, so I replaced all the plugs.

But Number one cylinder is not firing (runs the same with lead disconnected).

So, took the tank off and I see the plugs go into two small boxes under the air box.


Are these the coils?
Think that would be the problem ?


Not sure if it may be frowned apon to be asking how to questions with only 20 post
but hey, you guys are all I got and the only macanic around her is $90 per hour

Normally coil failure would mean two cylinders no go.Inside two and outside two fire as a pair hence two coils.
Could be carb fault or a lead fault.Some leads have resistors.Is the header pipe on that cylinder hot.Is the miss at low revs only.

That is 18mm LONG reach socket, the short reach depending on make can slip !

As Mossy says if it were a coil it would be TWO no shows on sparks.

Try changing the leads on that coil over and see if the failing cylinder changes . That would point to wire problem. If the mis stays on the same original missing cylinder that sounds carb related.

Do not feel bad about asking questions as a new member that is why this site exists to help the FZR owners of the world ( no small claim but true if you look at the locations of people on the list )

Thanks guys, I kinda figured two coils, two cylinders each.

I did a have a stuck float on a couple of occasions, gas pouring out. I thought maybe it was stuck closed this time so no gas traveling threw it at all. So I cleaned that float. Wasent the one in front of the missing cylinder but I will clean that one tonight.

So tonight I will check lead, clean float

Do the leads just pull off the coil ?
I was pulling pritty hard on them

Most Yamaha Coils have the leads sealed on if you try the switch around (as I described earlier )you do it at the plug end

So I opened the carb adjasent to the missing cylinder and behold a jet lying in the float bowl.
A jet had worked itself loose and fallen out. put it back in , So now she's running like a charm .

Hi,
Well I'm glad it was that simple to fix. Headlights ,bulbs, fuses, switch.FZR Switches are known dodgy when dirty.
