Difference between '91-93 and the '94-95 forks

I've been looking around and can't find it specifically what I'm looking for. We all know at this point that the '91-93 forks have a smaller diameter front axle and are physically different forks from the '94-95. I believe the '91-93 are Kyaba (sp?) and the '94-95 are Ohlins units. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I see that everyone says the later forks are better but I'm wondering what about them is better? I'm looking for one of the many folks here with much more knowledge than me to maybe explain. Maybe tell me whether the later forks are better but only really noticable on the track versus the street? What issues/problems/annoyances will I likely see with my '91 forks versus my '95 forks, if any?

The reason I'm asking is that I'm getting ready to put the '91 forks back on my bike so that everything matches. I just put new oil and dust seals in both '91 tubes and new oil after cleaning all the grime out of the fork tubes :yuck: . However, I want to make sure I know what to watch for to see if I want to keep them on there vs the '95 units I have. The usage this bike gets is commuter and fun time rides. I can typically lean over to about 3/4" from the sides of the tires but I'm not getting drastic lean angles or high cornering loads with the way I use the bike. This isn't to say I don't want good suspension but if it won't be noticeable in everyday riding versus hard track usage then I won't bother keeping the '95 units on there and repainting wheels to match.

Thanks,
Chris

I don't see any big difference. I suspect because the newer units (which are on my bike) are "better" because of who the manufacturer is. I do know that they are carry overs from the earlier YZF750 so that makes me think they were just trying to merge the whole YZF FZR line together at the particular time-which they did eventually do. You would achieve the same goal with either set of forks.

Thanks Sweekster.

BTW, what weight oil did you use when you rebuilt your forks?

I'm running 15w oil in mine now (stock is 10w) and have my preload at setting 4. The bike doesn't dive at during braking any more. Much more stable

Well, I won't be putting the '91 forks back on for a while. The lower tubes are bent. When I place a 12" ruler on the side with the bend centered I have about a 1/16" gap.

I found a couple places online that claim they can do fork straighting. I think I'll look into it since the bend is very slight.
