Hi everyone. I am currently getting my 1989-90 FZR 1000 Exup 3gm model out of mothballs. It's been sitting for about 8 months. I recharged the battery and with a little motivation the engine turned over no problem. I did replace the fuel in the tank and give it a service before starting her. I left the the bike for about a week and it would not start off the battery.
Now this is where I have a Question

Scenario:
The Ignition on but engine not running, lights off, Hooter (Horn) does not work.
The ignition on and engine running, lights off, hooter (Horn) works but a little reluctantly.
The ignition on and engine running, Lights ON, Hooter (Horn) does not work.
Give the throttle a bit of a twist, voltage climbs, then eventually the hooter (Horn) works.

It would appear that there is not enough voltage coming from the battery to power the hooter. I assume that from standing ,the battery has conked out? Is it possible that there could be another cause, like maybe the regulator?

Sorry, I'm from South Africa so we call a Horn a hooter.

This to me sounds like a dead battery. Even though you've charged the battery it may not have enough left to trigger the starter and spin the engine fast enough to start it. I would start with replacing the battery .

you might want to try hooking it up to a car battery or jump it from a car. Once it runs for a while, aslong as the alternator is working every thing might just work it self out, Then you can go to hooters, Ha ha

yea, i would just try to trickle charge the battery. If that doesn't work, battery's are simple no worry.

The battery when broken down will take charge from charger but will only accept a fraction of a full charge.When it stops taking the charge the current from the charger drops and the charger says battery full.The charging system in the bike works the same way and then the bike draws from the battery.As revs increase the faults go away temp the come back at lower revs again.Battery just has no ability to deliver the goods (MATE)lol.
New battery and you got a horny hooter again.

Thanks for the info. Will send the old battery in for testing, but will order a new one in the meantime.

Thats the best replacement.Handy to know the correct one as previous owner may have slipped something else in there

Thank you. It would appear that the previous owner did put in the wrong battery. I have ordered a YB14L-A2 from our local Yamaha dealer. The previous battery in the bike was a 12N14-3A. I don't know how it compares to the one that should be in there, but I'd rather have the right stuff.
