rear tire on my 1k

Post by josbourn1 »

its currently a 160/60/18, think i can fit a 180/55/18? 3/4 inch more diameter and just under an inch wider.

Are you sure it's an 18" rim?

Yeah his is an 18inch rim since his bike is a Genesis 1000. A 170/18 will fit. I don't think an 180/18 will.

You would be best to reatin the 160 size as putting a 170 will just squeeze the tyre into v shape and cause it to wear early in the center.I tried it once a long time ago when i had a 87 1000t and it was not great.handling not improved, didnt look wider as it just squashed up and only lasted 1/2 the normal time.
Your 1000 18inch rim is only 4.5inches wide.

I have a 190/50/17 on mine...not as tall as the 180/18 but wider so you should have no probs width wise

His rim is only 4.5inch wide on the Genesis model hence the 160 which is near max as it is.
Your later model 1000 will be 5.5inch

Lord knows that never stopped the rest of us... ha!

A 160 would perform nicely on that bike. Why do you want the wider tire?

I would suspect people ask about your skinny back tire? Ok well, FZR1000 EXUP rear end would probably be a bit big and need machining to get to fit not saying it can't be done BUT..YZF 750 rear will be easier to make work (stuff is hard to find though) and you'll need the ENTIRE rear end (Swingarm, wheel, brake rotor and caliper, sprockets, etc). The Delta Box frame the Genesis bikes have replaced the older FZs and I've seen a YZF750 swingarm on a FZ750 frame and it supposedly slid right in. You might also want to try a mid 90's GSXR 5.5 inch rear wheel. I've read that these wheels will fit right into an YZF600r (not R6) swingarm and that bike runs a 160 tire on a 5 inch wide wheel as stock form. The same wheel may very well fit on your 1k. I honestly have no Idea if it will work but it's another option. Not saying you should go do any of this. I'd more suggest keeping the 160 tire you have and getting the bike better suited to you. A well set up bike with a 160 tire will out perform a "so so" bike with a 180 tire any day of the week. Keep that in mind.

Another option is sell the bike and get one with the wider wheel stock...
