fzr 1000 needs modification help

Post by zfr1000r6 »

I was helping my brother with his p.o.s. katana 600 and we came across a pretty good write up on adding fuel injection to the katana (will ad the link later). My question is has anyone tried this with there fzr? I would be very interested in trying to ad it to mine (88 fzr 1000). would i be able to use the r1 computer and ad the sensors to my bike or should i just get the megasquirt system and do a custom tune on it?

Second question. I saw the sticky about putting the r6 header on the fzr600. would the same principal apply to the 1000 (use and r1 header)? I bought this bike and have been slowly putting it back together and it runs ok now but still has a slight miss at idle. once it revs up it runs good (i think it should have more power than what is feels like). The guy i bought it from put K&N filter pods on it and im not sure if he jetted it or not. the screws on the carb are pretty much stripped so i cant pull it apart and check. is there any other way of finding out? thanks

First off Welcome to the forum. Hope you like it here.

R1 CDI and senors wouldn't work. The engines are COMPLETELY different than the Genesis motor you have. A mega squirt with R1 Throttle bodies and a custom tune would be easier in the long run.

R1 header will not fit. Believe it or not the R1 motor is physically smaller in outside dimensions. I've looked into this myself for my 94 1000 EXUP. Also the only way to find out for sure about the carbs is to open them up and check things like the jets and needles out. I bought my bike with pods and what turned out to be a dynojet Stage 3 jet kit. I've since switched to a factory pro stage one kit and will be using a stock airbox with a drop in K&N filter.

The R6 headers don't fit until you stretch them though. Maybe you could squeeze these together?

If that's the case then custom headers would be the way to go. Lengthen and stretch to suit the need. Comparing stock to stock, this is different when dealing with an FZR1000 Genesis and R1 headers. From what I gather, they don't down far enough to clear the oil pan and don't go back far enough to clear things like rear sets and the like. I looked into this for my 1000 because I'm wanting to replace the Yoshi system on it now with an EXUP header and slip on-lot's of R1 EXUP headers around but they don't fit.

It's possible for sure and there are less headaches with going the Megasquirt route from what I've read. Here are a few examples:A Megasquirted 85 Suzuki GSX1100E and Pics of Diztroy's YZF Turbo and this 88 FZR 1000 is in the process of being converted.

if I could get my hands on the fuel injected part of an engine, I would do a write up on what needs to be done to get one installed onto the fzr motor

well if thats the case, here is how i see it. I will need to open up my cabs (after i find out how to get by the stripped screws) and find out what the deal is with the carbs. I might need to get a jet kit if the guy i bought it from was a dumb as i think he is (had a screw as the pushrod in the clutch master, enough said?) I would also have to deal with all the carb tuning. I have worked with megasquirt on camaros before so it is not that new to me. the way i see it is, TIME TO TEAR INTO A F.I. MOD!!! I will get the parts together and see if i cant get a write up going. maybe one day i will be one of the infamous stickies on the top of every one of the frz pages.......next step world domination. just kidding. I will look into a set of throttle bodies. I have done a little research and i know that the gsxr600 throttle bodies are modular (the come apart) on certain years so maybe i will try to use a set of those, i would have to remove the secondary butterflies and work out some kind of throttle linkeage but it is doable. Keep an eye out for a cheap set of 99-02 gsxr throttle bodies for me and let me know if you see anything. thanks and i will keep you informed.
as for the exhaust.....looks like i will be buying a welder and making up my own set.
