I write to you from the snowy Russia. We do not have thematic forums, so I'll try to ask here. Sorry for my english.
FZR1000 1988 2gh. Imported from the United States. There is a problem with the search in the presence of tires in stores for the 18" rear wheel. I'm Interested in the possibility of installing the 17" rear wheel from the later models (starting from 1989). Compatibility and related changes.
I would be very grateful for answers and happy to answer specific questions.

Hi!
It should be possible to exchange the wheel of the 2LA/2GH against a Wheel from a 3LE/3LF/3GM if you just exchange the wheelbearings and the inner distance-bolt/tube and will have to check if the outer distances are still usable or if you will have to make some new to center the wheel correctly...but i guess you would have to check if you also need to exchange the front sprocket against a sprocket with a fitting offset so that the chain will run straight and without touching the tire.
Bearingdata (from SKF,FAG and so on)for the 2LA/2GH Rearwheel:
Used Bearringtypes: 2x6303+1x6305
Oil/Mudprotecting Seals:
17x47x14 mm (inner diameter x outer diameter x thickness)
Axlediameter: 17 mm
Wheeltype: R-55
Bearingdata for the 3LE/3LF/3GM:
Used Bearingtypes: 2x6304/2RSR + 1x6305/2RSR
Oil/Mudprotecting Seals:
20x52x15 mm (inner diameter x outer diameter x thickness)
Axlediameter: 20 mm
Wheeltype: R-62
Thats a small takeout from the wheel&bearringlist from the german FZR-Forum, the only thing missing there is the information about axlelenghts and the distance of the inner sides of the swingarms (usefull for the needed wheeldistances you would obviously have to produce yourself if the already existing ones don't fit properly)...

I had a set tire 180/55 VR18 against 160/60 VR18, recommended by the manufacturer. The distance from the chain to the tires was approximately 10mm. I think with 170/60 VR17 problems of this kind will not arise.

I think I will be able to install wheelbearings 17x52x15. It will make it possible not to change the wheel axle, but in this case I need to know the length of axis and the width of the wheels on the level of the bearings. 20x52x15 mm and 17x47x14 mm are the sizes of the seals attached on the outside of the bearrings which protect the bearrings from dust and other mud, not the Bearringsizes
The "6303" and so on are the bearringtypes which are usually inside the wheels..there are lists of different types and their measurement avilable at different bearring-manufacturer sites, so you will have to check the measurements of both bearringsets to check for bearrings which use the outer diameter of the 3LE/3GM Bearrings and the inner diameter of the 2LA/2GH Bearrings..
Mostly these lists are also available at bearingresellersites, for example at https://www.ekugellager.de/rillenkugellager ("Kugellager" is the german translation of "ball-bearring" and "Rillenkugellager" is the kind of ball-bearings usually used in motorcyle wheels)...
Those lists exist for SKF,FAG,INA, Koyo (used by Yamaha as OEM-Bearrings) and most other bearring manufacturers, i personally would prefer SKF or FAG bearrings as they're of a better quality than Koyo and last longer,but at all if they keep the industrial standards it doesn't make such a huge difference in the bearrings, if you change them in 25.000 km runtime or 30.000 km, each of it would be far more runtime than expected in the yamaha serviceplans which mostly advice to change them in 19.200 kmruntime
The thing which might make it usefull to get an offset-sprocket would be the straight run of the chain to avoid damage to the gearshaft where the sprocket sits on...
