1988 front wheel/discs on '89 forks?

Post by Jkden »

hello all -

Well, not on this forum much, but lots of information I have been doing some research... I am a yammi fan with a 2000 R1, (ok I do have a 2006 ZX14, so not all Yammi), and I picked up an awesome 1985 FZ750. I really like the looks; and runs very will surprisingly, I got it for a song.

My question is: I am going to swap on a set of FZR1000 forks and tree onto the bike - the forks I am looking at are 1988, and the wheel is for an '89. So, I will leave it to you wizened FZR experts to answer - will 89 wheel and disc fit onto an 88 fork and brake calipers? If not, then will 89 discs fit on, and will it all line up with the 88 brake calipers? Any information is useful, I am trying to figure out what parts work with what.

Picked up this '85 FZ750, will be swapping on FZR suspension and have an '89 motor to go into it.

I stand corrected but I don't believe the 89 wheel will fit the 88 forks as the earlier model ran skinnier wheels. The discs and calipers should fit tho as they're both 100mm centred caliper bolts and discs are interchangeable 320 dia with 64 dia hole

Ok so then, will '88 brake discs fit on an '88 wheel and line up with the calipers on '87-88 forks? From what I see the discs are pretty much the same, but I am confused about whether they have the same offset, and line up laterally or not.

This helps though, no '89 wheel on 97-88 forks. Anyone else please feel free to chime in.

PS also have a complete '89 EXUP motor with exhaust and wiring harness along with EXUP servo... just need an '89-92 (I believe) digital ignition box. Intent it to swap this into the '85 FZ750 (have been told by numerous) guys who own them that the mechanical swap is straight up.

May also pick up a '99 YZF600 Thundercat with a toast motor but good suspension to put onto my '85 FZ.... so many ideas.

Yes motor will fit

As for igniter box you'll need 89-90 as they have the round plug for the Exup servo whereas the later plugs were more rectangular

Also known of the 750 CDI being used which allows a higher rev limit but you're into a whole lot of pain if you over Rev the motor without upgrading the internals

Ha yes thanks for that, if and when I swap the FZR1000 motor in, I will be swapping it in with entire wiring harness and 89-90 ignition box... researching and I found out that for a 3LW, there are a couple additional red wires poking out of it, I looked at FZR1000W '89-90 wiring schematic to make sure I knew what I had.

With a full EXUP and new suspension it should transform the FZR750, though I think that about 130-135 rwhp is about as much as that steel frame can handle, up from about 90 rwhp of the FZ750 motor.

Just be aware that if you're using the EXUP loom there are a couple of spare wires that are market specific. In the UK there's a red/black wire unused and a red/white wire. Both are located mid loom around the starter and fuel pump area
