FZR1000 Race Bike
Gentleman,
Nice to meet you all, my name is Paulo and I'm in Australia working for RPE Racing
We recently got an 1987 FZR1000 to use in historic P6 racing (up to 1990). I will share some of what we do and ask for your help and input.
Bike specs are:
Engines stock
Yoshi tri oval
R6 quick throttle
Thunderace front end, rear end
Sumitomo Brakes
braided lines
I am currently " simplifying" the electrics and lightening the bike, lights off and making it race ready. We will race in the 19 March at Eastern Creek .
Had the bike on the dyno and put out 129 whp. We were stocked. I know this is a high value for a genesis but it is real. Maybe it has a jet kit as the mixture is spot on, I don´t know yet. A 2008 R1 with power commander puts down 150 whp on this dyno, for reference
We also have a set of Keihin FS 41mm to put in. Its going to be interesting what gains we see in a stock bike, if any.
Input, ideas and help are welcome. We will be getting a spare engine to work on and make fully sick but its still early days.

Re: FZR1000 Race Bike
Not sure about the genesis model but the weak point of the following Exup is the clutch. There's a clutch mod on the factory pro web site where the baskets is machined to allow more oil to the rear of the clutch. This helps eliminate chatter off the deck

Re: FZR1000 Race Bike
Clutch should be fine for a while mine is getting close to 150 on stock basket.
Some things you can do to liven it up even more.
-YZF750 cams. I have a spare set if interested. (this would really help out those big carbs)
-Replace the intake valve springs with exhaust valve springs. They are stiffer.
-FZR750 cdi will raise the rev limiter 1000 rpm or so and has a better advance curve.
-If you are worried about the clutch basket you can swap the basket with a yzf750 basket but you have to rivet it to the fzr1000 ring gear.
-add a fzr1000 exup oil cooler. Actually to heat up the oil more so then cooling it in the morning.
-The Genesis radiator is kinda small so may think about changing that. But mine has been fine on the track.
Some questions is that rear swing arm stock? it does not look like it. I think it is the thunderace swingarm
you already have blue dot brakes so that is good.
It looks like your exhaust is a slip on with a exup header?
Last if you are going to go into the internals of the engine
-The Genesis rods are not great and known to fail. I swapped mine for exup rods and wiseco made me some pistons for them they have 1mm bigger wrist pin.
-I swapped to a 6 speed transmission from a yzf750.
Let me know if you have any other questions. Awesome looking bike btw.

http://www.oehlins.info/advanced_search ... 00&x=0&y=0 might be interesting for you guys...this comapny has goz adjustable camshaft-sprockets in their program and they also produce camshafts on demand as well as they do other tuning on request ...they even have more parts available than klickable in the catalogue so a request by email might be helpful if you're looking for some very special racing or tuning parts

Re: FZR1000 Race Bike
Those sprockets look good.
I found some sources for cams, probably for a 98 R1. I am assuming the cams are compatible?

Paulo

Re: FZR1000 Race Bike
FZR and YZF have the cam-sprockets in the middle of the camshaft, r6, r7 and r1 at the side as far as i know,so it would obviously not be compatible i guess
But don't mind about their english, as here in the formerly west-german areas everyone learned english at school so that they should at least be able to read and understand it even if they have to check which one of their employees will be able to write it properly for an answer
And knowing how to order a beer in a pub is always a good startingpoint in the evenings here in german pubs as you will at least not run dry until someone able to understand you would enter the pub

Re: FZR1000 Race Bike
Thanks for all the good info.
Found some cam manufacturer - mega cycle cams I think that had a nice range. Here: http://www.megacyclecams.com/catalog/Page68.pdf
Anyway just gonna drop this here haha - 41 mm FCRs and some other small touches. Stock head and bottom end. This thing just keeps getting better.
Need to tune the carbs better, had to feather the throttle, hence the lower bottom end. There is a couple more hp on top too, I believe

Re: FZR1000 Race Bike
Not bad at all. The fcr can be like that on the bottom end. It can be tricky to tune out completely. Long as you don't mind that race bike feel they are great!

Re: FZR1000 Race Bike
Any experiente with bolting a yzf750 head straight on the 1000?
My main question is with valve - pistons clearance.
CR would be around 14:1. Race gas needed

Re: FZR1000 Race Bike
I actually just got one and plan on trying some things soon. Thought about a short stroke big bore engine also.
