Buying FZR 1000 Genesis - What to look out for

Post by MobyN »

Hi All,

I am from India and looking at buying an FZR 1000 Genesis. My first litre class bike.
I love their low RPM whistle and the bike will be mostly used for low speed city runs and occasional bursts, if any.

Would like to know what are the things I should look out for?
Also what kind of maintenance to expect from this old bike.

Many thanks,
Moby.

First off just generally how well the bike has been taken care of is a good indicator.
More major issues to watch out for are ticking or knocking from the engine. It is usually either a chipped primary drive tooth. (this happened to mine)
The 1987-1988 have a rod design that is more vulnerable and can wear out leading to rod knock. Also there have been issues with clutch baskets.
Overall the engines pretty much bullet proof as is the rest of the bike.
The biggest problems maintenance wise you may see are carb work and syncing the carbs. Also the valve adjustments. try to get a 1989 or newer as the valve shims for the 87-88 are getting hard to find.
I bought most of the US stock i could get a hold of last order.
Please let me know if you have any other question.

Do you have the bike already? What condition is it in? Original parts are getting hard to come by now..especially plastics.
Only problem I've had so far during my rebuild is the HT leads shorting to the cylinder head due to their age. Worth while replacing these as you end up missing and/or running on 3, loose power. Can also give the impression of a knock if you are not familiar.
