Just bought a 94 Fzr1000!

Hey guys just got a beautiful fzr1000 last week with only 9k miles on it and perfect fairings. The bike seems to run great, just have a couple of questions about shifting. First off, is it normal for 1st and 2nd gear to sound a little clunky when shifting? Also I've read about 2nd gear going bad on these bikes (as well as ninjas and other sport bikes). Mine doesn't pop out of gear, but sometimes it's a little reluctant to go from 1st to 2nd. Do I just need to really make sure I shift it hard from first to second? Thanks!

If you look at the end of the selector shaft there's a centre punch mark, the split in the arm should align with the mark. Also make sure the chain ain't too tight. It'll make gear shifts difficult and will eventually wear the output bearing with undue pressure

Yeah the shifter alignment looks good, and my friend who is a mechanic said the chain was on the tighter side, but there is still slack in the line. I think I just need to kick harder! lol Is it pretty normal though for these bikes to be clunky through gears?

My 92 TDM 850 (half an FZR engine but bored out a bit) is very clunky and that is normal for that...just takes a slightly different approach....you tried clutchless shift?
Think it's just one of those things from that era..

Be a while before I can try my FZR..

Cool I'm glad that it's normal. I don't do any clutchless shifting, never really seen the point with how easy it is to use the clutch.

I have a 89 fzr 600 and 05 r6 and they both clunky from first to second. Other gears are smooth. It quite normal especially for Yamaha gearboxes.

What weight oil is in the bike? The clutch is a wet clutch and the engine oil also lubricates the transmission. I've tried different oils (10W40, 20W50, etc ...) but my bike runs much better with the Yamalube 20W40. Both the engine and transmission run smoother with the 20W40. Give it a try and see if it makes difference. Also check your shift linkage to make sure it's adjusted correctly.

I have a 92 exup 1000 and Use mineral oil in the gearbox, it gives smoother gear changes than synthetics and sounds a lot quieter on tick over.

You can feel really the power once the EXUP valve goes fully open. Just remember to have feet on the pegs, weight forward and a good grip on the bars when you do it.
