from memory 89-95 are compatible. Its the different regions you have to look out for as some countries restricted power outputs

How can one tell if there CDI box is restrictive? And how does it restrict power output?

iits easier to go by the ones you KNOW aren't restricted...the French ones ARE
If you search by the parts number for the unrestricted version and then use the serial number to match the unrestricted versions
The UK version is OK and its serial for the 89-90 model is TID14

So if the CDI box in your bike says max 140HP is that a restriction or all the power the bike made?

Hi not all CDI boxes are the same you will need one from a 91 on wards ie RU EXUP on the earlier boxes have loose wire connections the latter has just 2 multipin connector on CDI box, these are a lot harder to get hold of

sorry that information is incorrect. the 89-90 also have the multipin block connectors. Mine does and thats a 90 R model with right way up forks

You will also find 89-90 has 1 exposed wire for the reserve switch and a wiring harness with connector on the end sticking out for the exup servo valve, 91-95 has just 2 multi pin connectors, one with 13 pins the other with 6 pins

Now I am with genesis 1000 on this.
The pre 1989 models (Genesis 1000) have an oblong shaped TCI unit with 2 multiplugs and no tails.;

The 1989/90 Exup models (Exup 1000R) have a square shaped TCI with 2x multiplugs and a tail for the Exup plug plus 1 single bullet connector tail;

The post 1989/90 models (Exup 1000 RU) also have a square shaped TCI box but have only the 2x multiplugs and no extra tails;

To Rooster;
The quoted figure for UK Exup 1000R models was 145 crank hp resulting in circa 125 rw/hp.
This was varied regionally in Europe by TCI and inlet rubber restrictions.
Post was being composed as previous reply was being posted.

seems to be a mix up of words....
loose wire connections and other has 2 multi pin
which suggested to me the loose wire connections didnt have multi pin
