Just found this site. I'm also on EXUP Brotherhood forum. Already I can tell there is alot more action here then the other, which is kinda of ashame because there are some great people there. Anyway just to let you know alittle about me I own 2 89 FZR1000's and a 88 Kaw ninja 250r. Although I haven't been riding much due to life in general and kids but now I'm starting to get at least one of my bikes running but having issues with it.
I sent my carbs down to a guy named WiredGeorge out of Texas and now I can't get it to start. I've check for spark and do have it. I've did an Ohm check on the spark plug wires and they are good and also checked voltage at the plugs going into the coils and have good volts there. I've change the TCI. While looking at the wiring I found a couple of bad wires but fixed them and still can't get it to start. The bike turns over all day long. I know I'm getting fuel due to plugs being wet. So now I'm thinking maybe cam sensor or crank senser or even the handlebar switch. Thank god I have two bikes otherwise I would be spending money on parts that were not bad
Anyone with any other thoughts please feel free to let me know.

Did it start before you sent the carbs to WiredGeorge?

Welcome. I'm not as versed on the 1k as I am with the 600. So I'm sure someone that knows more than me will chime in. Have you checked the exup valve to make sure it opens and closes?

The bike ran before I sent the carbs down but before that I haven't started the bike in about a year before that. Thats why I sent the carbs down there, plus nobody around here wanted to touch them. As far as the exup valve no I haven't checked that but will. Forgot about that. I was figuring on the electrical side seeing that I was not getting spark to begin with. Now that that is sorted out I will look at the valve. Thanks for the input.

So today I checked the EXUP valve and the wiring according to the manual and everthing checks out good. So I pulled out all 4 plugs and they are getting fuel (but I'm dumping gas straight down the carbs) and all 4 plugs are firing. Even dumping gas down the carbs you would figure that the bike would at least want or sound like it wants to start, but it just turns over without any indication of firing off. Maybe tomorrow I'll check the timing. I also looked down the spark plug holes and saw the pistons moving so that's good.
One thing I noticed is when I grab the exup servo valve pully the relay and fuel pump started to click rapidly. Does anyone know if this normal? This is really got me stumped at the moment.

No that does not seem normal, when you turn on the power to the bike does the fuel pump run a timed cycle? you hear it pump for about 5 seconds when you turn on the key and flip on run switch.

Yes everything seems to run normal. I'm really starting to think the timing is off. The reason being is I haven't started the bike in such a long time that the first time I tried to start it it want to fire but the engine seem to jump. I know its hard to explain it like this but everything I've checked is good so far. And now it just turns over with nothing happening. Tonight or tomorrow I'm going to check where the timing marks are and go from there.

It will not be timing .
The pick up is fixed and is unable to shift unless it has been dis assembled and modified.

If the bike ran before storage there is no reason to suspect anything except fuel problems provided the plugs are in good condition.

Sending carbs away to be cleaned/adjusted seems folly; you have no idea what has been done to them ,plus the
shop has no means of testing.

Good pionts willanddip. I took the valve cover off last night and checked the timing and it is dead on so that rules that out. I have another question about the coil pick up. When you pull out the screw holding the pickup in should it come out easily or is it a pain in the ass. I tried getting it out last night just to take look at it and it will not come out. The service manual says it should come out but it is in there tight. Looking at the diagram it looks like it should slide out seeing there is only an o-ring and the screw holding in place
As far as the carb work that I had done to my carbs they flow test each carb before they ship them out, which is one of the reasons I sent them to this guy. The other reason was nobody here wanted to touch them due the dealerships were saying that they were getting bad gaskets in the kits and people were bringing their bikes back to them to have them fixed. One of the dealerships here give me wiredgeorge's number and swears by this guy only because he deals with the older bikes. The only drawback with this guy is I had to wait 10 months to get them back. But I swear they look brand new. Now I'm not saying he could have screw something up but I'm trying to cover everything else because I know nothing about carbs or even what to look for if something was wrong. have you double checked the kill switch and the side stand cut out switch. Is the reserve switch wired in and connected.
I believe theres a step by step guide in the Yam service manual to what checks need to be made to get it to fire

He says in the first post he has ignition at the plugs;
Thoroughly clean the plugs and use abrasive paper in the gap or replace.
Have a fully charged battery; jump lead assistance is even better.
Spray starter fluid into the airbox.(read the can !)

Lots of times bikes fail to start after long lay-ups because the piston rings have taken a bit of a "set" and full
compression pressure cannot be brought to bear.
Starter fluid and high cranking speed + very good plugs overcome this initially.
Once started and run a few times the problem solves itself.

This is all providing that the carbs are correctly adjusted .!

Paul (Stig) has a good write up of how to service and set carbs on his site somewhere. (I would hope !)

Infact I have just re-read your first post; Why do you not swap the carbs over on the two bikes, providing one at least runs ? .That way you eliminate the fuelling altogether.

Setting carbs up on a flow bench is by no means a guarantee that the engine will run with those settings.
It is simply a means of testing how each alteration of the settings compare.
