toobs

Post by coops »

Ive recently done a full rebuild on my 89 track day race bike and its running great. good smooth strong power throughout. But I suspect its running a little rich. Only because it smells rich (at idle) and the pipe (which is near new) is quite black, starts with no choke And its done 40,000 kms. Im not that bothered that its rich because it spends most of its time at 1/2 too full throttle where it runs on the mains, so worn tubes don't matter at full throttle. And like I said, it runs great.
But im fussy, so im looking at new needles and tubes. Done a little searching and erring on the side of factory pro kit and tubes. But im also a little suspisious of any aftermarket carburettor kits due to other crap carb kits for other bikes ive had. If I could buy OEM needles and toobs I would. Are they available?
What are these kits like? What is my best option? Ive heard someone here sells needles, and tubes? Maybe I should just drop the needles one notch and save my moneys!
Undecided.
The bike is basically stock engine, just a race pipe and filter is similar to stock.
I would be pissed if I spent 300 bucks, did the work and it runs worse.
Cheers

There is a difference in running "rich" at idle and at 1/2 or WOT.

If you're too rich at idle, then adjust the IMS (Idle Mixture screws). If you mess with the dropping a notch on the needles, then you will be messing with partial throttle response and it might not be what you want.
