O-ring around liners

The big red ones around the liners at the bottom of the barrels.
What do these do? My ones have a whole bunch of carbon underneath, enough to start pushing them out of the groove they sit in.

They are seals. Were you leaking oil from that joint? They are used on the 3HE engines, but not the 4tv so I think the base gasket should be enough to hold the oil, ..but they were there for a reason.

I gotta wonder why you have carbon there tho....
