EXUP Valve worn

Post by CalFZR »

So I had the noisy Exup valve and ordered new bushing as this seemed to be the repair.
Well took it all apart and figured it to be a straight forward repair( this is after breaking the 3 bolts off and having to drill them out and re-threading the holes), but was surprised to find that the shaft sections of the valve were completely worn down.
Figured I would just order a new valve, but almost got a heart attack when I got the price-$450. :swear
For that price I would rather take a chance at fixing the valve. Welded up the worn surface end remachined it on the lathe.
I had to make a support rod to fit in the vlave so it would not bend as I clamped in the lathe between centers.
Came out perfect after machining. Re-assembled it and now its quite and work like a charm.
Didnt take pics of the worn shaft, but did of the welded surface and during machining.

Ingenuity and hard work pay off hmmm.... Kinda like the way it should be, not just say whatever and dump it for a newer bike. Great post and good job. :)

Thanks rooster.

You are correct, I could easily just go and buy an R1, but I still think these are one of the best all time bikes.
I'm also ready to install R1 front forks, so it should handle better.

I would like to do the same, I think then I would try to change to 16" wheels and tires.

I have just done an R1 front end on my project bike. you might want to look at the results, its not as hard as it is made out, but it's not just a straight swap.
