Fzr 1000 exup valve issues
Has anyone had any issues with the exup valve on the older fzrs? My bike is lacking power on lower rpms but once it gets to around 5000 rpm it seems fine. I ha a mechanic tell me that maybe the valve was having issues opening at lower rpms or that it was stuck open

completely. Pull your lower left fairing off, and do some maintenance on the EXUP.

Re: Fzr 1000 exup valve issues
And will this work for the 1988 fzr 1000?
Re: Fzr 1000 exup valve issues
Ahhhh ... No. The 87-88 "Genesis" 1k had no EXUP.

Damn. I wonder what the problem could be then?
Re: Fzr 1000 exup valve issues
Check the battery voltage at 3k rpm. If the stator or regulator or battery isn't producing enough juice, you get a weak spark.
You may have lousy carbs affecting performance at the bottom end.

- Clean your carbs, paying particular attention to the pilot jets. They are difficult to get properly clean, and may need to be replaced.
Sync the carbs.
Adjust your idle mixture screws.

Re: Fzr 1000 exup valve issues
Is cleaning carbs something a guy could do without any knowledge of carbs? I'm no where near wing a mechanic.
Re: Fzr 1000 exup valve issues
Yes, slowly, carefully. It's not hard, just finicky. There are a few threads here on carb cleaning; a quick search should get you some good ideas. Big 'gotcha' - you do NOT need to (or want to!) separate the carb bodies from the rack. Strip the jets from the bowls, inspect the other stuff from the slide covers. Leave one carb fully assembled while you work on the others - saves on "Now where does THAT part go?!" moments ...

Re: Fzr 1000 exup valve issues
Thanks for the tips. Ill give that a try this weekend. Hopefully I don't mess it up too bad
Re: Fzr 1000 exup valve issues
Another thing... I've been told there is a specific tool needed to sync carbs?
Re: Fzr 1000 exup valve issues
Yes there is. But if you do a bench sync (google search it) you can get it very close if your careful. Which is what I did. Then later on I bought a Morgan carb sync pro and checked my setting, it was close but not quite there. No noticeable performance difference, it will just idle better and sound a bit more syncd. The morgan tool is the one to get from my research. good value for money. cant remember what it cost, less than a hundered bucks maybe, which is what you would pay a mechanic to do the job. Good luck.jken91 wrote:Another thing... I've been told there is a specific tool needed to sync carbs?
