Where can I buy Float Chamber rebuild kit or parts

Post by twbluff »

I have a 1992 that leaks excessively from the overflow while running. All of my research has pointed to the floats but I wanted to have the replacement gaskets and rings as well as new floats available when I take here apart. Does anyone know where on=line I can find these parts to fit a 92.
Thanks

Did you set the float heights? To check the floats submerge them in fuel (or water) overnight. Next day give them a shake. If some liquid is sloshing around inside then the float leaks. If the float isn't broken then it is probably still good. It could be the needle and seat. It is also possible to confuse the vent line on the carbs with the fuel inlet line. Hooking the fuel supply line to the vents will cause a similar problem.

Most of us reuse the seals and gaskets since they cost a fortune at the Yamaha dealer. This usually works just fine.

I will try to check the floats but I am having a hard time removing the bottom screws. not clear on how to set the height them though, the repair manual doesn't go into allot of detail.
I think the fuel lines are correct, the vent lines are between carbs 1&2 and 3&4 at the top, then join together and the line ends to the rear of the left foot peg above the chain just under the fuel pump. When I started I didn't mess with the way it was set up.
I would hate to find out how much a dealer would charge to fix this!
Please keep the advise coming, I am no expert and I am learning as I go.

The screws on the bowl can get frozen on there pretty tight. When I first took my carbs apart I was having trouble stripping out the phillips head screws. So I tried every phillips head screwdriver in my toolbox. I finally found one that fit very tight with no wiggle. I put a little muscle on it and the screws came right out. This screw driver is one of those 6 in 1 jobs with a bright orange handle that has different size straight and phillips drivers that snap in and out. Now it is my go-to phillips screwdriver on motorcycle repair. Sometimes you just can't get it. Then you have to use a dremel to grind a slot for a flat bladed screwdriver. No Dremel? Then use a drill. Start with a small hole in the center just deep enough to penetrate the head. Then go up in drill diameter. When your drill diameter exceeds the screw diameter the head will fall off. Do this to as many as needed to remove the bowls but leave the bowls in place while drilling. Clean off all the chips then remove the bowls. The little stubs of screws left in the carb body should come out without too much trouble. I just use pliers usually.

An observation: If the float bowls are that hard to remove then it has been a long while since anyone looked inside. They really need your attention.

Going back together you will want to use some small allen head screws from the hardware store. Just don't overtighten and strip out the threads.

Somebody who has set float heights on the FZR1000 please jump in here and help out.

Float height setting is the same for all FZR although the "standard" height may vary !! (see manual)

for a tool to do this easily see:-

YG - good link. I used that same picture when I set my float heights. So who knows the proper height for the FZR1000 floats?

Actually, float height for the 3HE 600 is in the 20mm - 24mm range. The 1WG 400s are around 13mm (not sure what stock is but mine are set at 13 and she seems happy).

Hmm the English language getting in the way again ....

I did not say the height was the same for all FZR's, that is what you read, I said float height setting (i.e the method of setting the float height) is the same & to illustrate what that method was gave the link to RD 's tool (and by that I do not mean his wedding tackle <BG> just in case you got that idea from what i wrote ) jk
