Dog Bones For Drag Racing

Post by bluesbreaker45 »

Hello all,

I started drag racing my 1994 FZR 1000 this year and since the racing season is over I'm getting the bike ready for next drag race season :no Hopefully I can make it a bit faster! I have ordered a lowering strap for the front end and am fabricating some longer dog bones for the rear.

My question is how long can I make the dog bones?

I know the factory length is 165mm (6.496") Could I go to 180mm (7.086") or 185mm (7.283")?

Does anyone know the max length I can go on the dog bones without the rear suspension binding?

Thanks

Zack

That's a very good question. You may have to do some trial and error since I haven't seen this discussion before. Maybe a set of adjustable bones would help in this situation.

ReelRazor does adjustable dogbones, but I also seem to remember some bright spark worked out the ratio that blah mm longer/ shorter altered the ride height to "X" inches . its buried in the search engine some place

I see that sweekster came up with a dog bone ratio in the FZR 400 forum. He says shortening the dog bones 1mm will raise the tail 2.4mm on average. I suppose this would work in reverse as well- lengthening the dog bones 1mm will lower the tail approximately 2.4 mm.

Do you guys think this ratio is the same for a 1000?

And that still doesn't tell me the max i can go without suspension bind.

I may have to be the guinea pig on this one? :ermm:

Thanks for all the input guys!

It's looking that way. Keep us informed on your progress. ReelRazor should be able to make adjustable dog bones to fit the 1k and make them longer if necessary, but with what you're doing, you'll have to first get him a proper starting length.

Yeah, the ratio isn't a straight ratio either..., my recollection is that it starts near 2.1:1 and ends near 4:1.

And, yeah, I have dogbones stock available....

$60 shipped in U.S....intl. would be based on postal costs.

This will be custom...longer to start if you want lowering links, shorter if that is what you want. You end up with 25mm adjustability (at the dogbone)...about 3 inches at the seat.

I decided to go with 184.15mm (7.25") dogbones.

This seems to be as low as you can go while retaining the factory length kick stand- Some might want to shorten their kick stand as it makes the bike stand almost vertical. I did, however, give my bike a pretty good bump, just to test, without it falling over. I'll probably shorten the kick stand ultimately.

This does aggressively lower the bike though and tucks the back wheel in nicely under the tail. I love the look, personally and I'm sure I love the performance!

By the way, coreo19 is my brother we each have a 1994 FZR 1000.
