hi all i have a few miner problems .. i went on a ride tuesday witch wond up being close to 400 miles worth (i got lost ) ok is this normal milage id have to switch tank to reserve every 96 miles or so what kind of milage should i be getting (its a 91 1000 and has a gutted yoshi pipe and no clue if its been jetted but the tail pipe does get thick black carbon on it by the end of the week 150 miles of riding. my second problem is on the way home it was dark and had to stop twice to scrub down the viser on my helmit and bike rad is full of bugs (think i hit a bug naeto) whats the easiest way to get them out as melting bug guts were stinking up my garage ...thanks for any advice
On my all stock 1998 FZR600 I'm getting 50-55mpg.
I have to switch to reserve at ~200 miles.
I don't ride much at all in the traffic/city, and oddly enough can't seem to see much of a change in mpg from cruising though rural VA and zippin' through the twisty WV mountains.

All Original, except for a custom saddlebag set up. A machine shop buddy of mine seamlessly fitted two GS bags on the rear end for last summers ride.

Mileage "should" be around 35-40 depending (roughly 160miles per tank) although I heard stories of some 1000s getting 190 miles per tank. Sounds to me like you've got a richness problem if you are seeing heavy amounts of carbon build up after long rides. You may want to look into adjusting/tuning the carbs. It's something you can yourself with a little patience. Lots of info on the site regarding that as well so I suggest giving the search a go. As far as the bugs...a good cleaner (even Windex) and a bristle brush will do the trick.

Yeah I get about 110 miles before switching to reserve which means I head to the nearest gas station...so you figure 5 gallon tank, 1 gallon reserve...4 gallons before...110/4= 27.4 mpg.... and like impala said... I ride mine hard... on long the hwy I get close to 40 when cruising hwy... My valve seals I think need to be redone but I haven't done a compression test to see if its the rings Im getting oil blow by at...either way a full rebuild is in order this winter as the dogs on 2nd gear are worn...or the shift fork is bent a lil....
Either way Im running a stage 1 FP kit and DnD slip on n KnN filter.. I know Im running rich just haven't had time with work to take the time and lean it out....
i been riding pretty hard lkatly decided to take it asy on a tank or two and got same milage ...go figure..put some new plugs in it and it runs way beter still stumbles while idling carbs are next

The stumbling on FZR at idle is very common until the bike is thoroughly warm.
well mine seems to do it once its warmed up siting at a light it will studder every once ina while .. when its cold it just idles real low but if my choke worked and i didnt hav to push start it might help too

W,
if it happens occasionally at the lights once the bike is well warmed up I would suspect a plug of fouling or being wrongly gapped.
If you are having to bump start the bike may I ask why? If your battery is low on juice then that points to a VERY serious problem brewing that could take out virtually all your electronics on the bike .
o no batterys good one of the idler gears broke so my starter wont ingage unless ua rock the bike in gear some times itll start other times its a horribole grinding noise .. dont have the cash to hav moter torn down to fix it
Put 300 k on my 92 FZR EXUP this morning. Topped off tank zeroed trip meter and refilled after 200 k. kilos travelled devided by litres consumed multiplied by 2.84 gave me 33/34 mpg. I rode with spirit. I'd like better but expect this is about normal Yosh pipe. Dyna jet kit.. seems normal not Fat or lean.
Good clean Power and fun

i get 125ish to reserve with K&N and Harris race can no matter how much action the throttle gets. Worn emuilsion tubes will make hell of a difference to the MPG. identifiable by the roll on bogging down below 2500rpm.
as for bugs, i cover the screen with a damp towls when I get home and leave for 5 mins then simply wipe off. on the visor, i use damp paper kitchen roll and wipe off easily
i get about 150-160 miles to the tank, and we limey's use mr sheen for the bugs as its great for cleaning helmet visors and plastics try to google it and see if you have an equivalent
