94 fzr 1000 general questions

Post by mplumb59 »

Hello folks, i am new to your forum, i just purchased a 94 fzr 1000 genesis. i know very little about these bikes. the bike has 32000 miles on it. I think? i paid 300 dollars for the bike and carbs for 150. the bike is now running, but i need to get the papers straight and work out a few qerks. i am a very short person and would like to lower it an inch or two. any suggestions. It also needs a front nose piece. i have recently been looking on ebay for it with no luck, any suggestions were would be the best place to get one. i really want to make this a track bike but would like to ride it on the street too. I'll be around in the fnear uture. hopefully will ride it on tuesday. Give me some input. I am in Southeastern Louisiana, -plan on getting to no problem raceway in december hopefully. Thanks and yall have a great day. :headbang:

Hi MP,
welcome aboard.
First please put the fact that you are in S Louisiana in you profile so we can ALWAYS see where you are , we a sociable lot and like to get togethers for rides and visits.

Nice find on the bike and a good price

with regard to you seating height, look up one of our Members REELRAZOR he makes ajustable dogbones (the link to the shock from the swing arm ) when yoy do the rear height you must also lower the front by the same amount to keep the handling neutral if you do not you will find the front a bit twitchy

There are after market companies who make replica bits but alot of guys use modern bike plastics on there bikes with nice results take a troll thro the old threads

Well lowering the front is almost impossible without machine work as the forks have stops machined into them (ask me how I know). You could have the stops on your forks machined lower and that will lower the height of the front. Swapping the front end to a newer setup like that from an R1 would help BUT I recall that being deemed to low for the 1000- could be just right for you. That has been done though Lowering the rear would require new longer dog bone links. Stock length for the dog bones is 165mm from eye to eye. To lower the rear they would need to be longer (for example 175mm).

Hope that helps

Sweek,
So what is this? there are ledges. built in collars on the forktubes to stop the adjustment of the tripletree down them?

Got a picture? as I do not remember noticing that on the one FZK1K I played with at the track for a lap or two back in the day.

Has anyone tried to put a gixxer front end on one of these bikes. I have an 04-05 750 front end. I know i can lower the trees down those tubes. Oh yea, how do you know you cant lower the front. Is there any play before the stops. I only want to lower it an inch.

Pretty much. There is a "step" inward close to the top. The "step" is the exact height of the top clamp. Some one good on the lathe can machine that step so it's lower on the fork. Seen here:

As far I know, no and I'm still curious to know whether what I read is just a myth. Most popular front end swap for a 94-95 FZR 1k is the YZF750R SP (this model never came to the states) front end as they are a direct bolt on and fully adjustable (whereas the FZR just has preload). We do have 1 member here who has an 89-90 model FZR1k with an R1 front end but that model didn't have the USD forks.

Sweek,
Thanks for that I can see why I never noticed when built you would take the diam to be the same top & bottom of the forks.

GSXR fronts I believe are shorter axle to clamp than FZR's & yammies in general.

No worries Geo. I thought about bringing the front of mine down a bit then had that big "Gotcha" when I did the fork seals. Still the ride is perfect for me.
