Beloved FZR ...speak to me - "Problem Fixed"

Post by ofloinn3 »

It just went silent on me.

I've never had any problem with my beloved '94 until last Sunday. Started right up like it has everyday for the last 3 yrs ...moved it across the street, so I could pull a trail up to the house. When I went to start it up to move it back ...I heard nothing but silence. The lights on the gauge cluster went out as soon as I hit the start button. It didn't come back on until about 20 minutes later. Hit the start again with the same result.

I tested the battery and it is at 10.44 volts. So plenty of juice in the box. When the lights came on for me today I ran it down the street and jumped the clutch. It fired right up and ran like the fine tuned monster machine it is. I shut her off and then tried to start her back up, and nothing but silence.

I'm thinking it could be the starter but would that cause the lost of juice coming from the battery? When I turn the key with the tester on the battery, It loses all power and drops to .003-.005.

Any idea's fzrians. I gotta get this baby back up and running right away. It's bad enough I can ride it right now, but DelMarVa Bike Week is in a couple weeks. It wont be the same down there without me. Last year I was stopped by a local TV new station and interveiw. It was aired that night on the 10pm broadcast. The green FZR was a STAR for about 45 seconds.

Sorry for being long winded ...Whoever can solve the mystery will be my new BFF. I'll even send you a birthday card. HELP!!

Wrong ....dead battery my friend. My 1k did the same until I got a brand new battery. These bikes NEED a strong battery to start.

needs AT LEAST 11v to start. when bikes running it actually should get close to 14v...when bikes off it should be about 12.25-13.5

but yea, new battery. trust me...been there...

you can get a cheap one at walmart too, don't have to break the bank

FZRs tend to eat batteries quicker than newer bikes

walmart also gives you like 15 days to bring in your old battery after purchase and they give you like $15 off the cost of your new battery

Honestly, I would advise against a Walmart battery simply because that's what I just replaced. But that's just me. Spend the money and get a good battery<- that's my advice.

Okay ...here's the update. First off, my battery is the sealed type so, no adding water, acid or anything else. I tested the battery again today and it reads 12.87. The light cluster at first didn't come on. Once it did, I tried to start it with the same result ...nothing. I've started my bike before with the charger plugged into it because the battery was dead from working on the lights and blinkers. So, wouldn't it start this time with the charger plugged into it??? Why am I losing all power from the battery when I hit the start button??? How do I test some of the other system units, like the starter and electronic ignitor??? A new battery is looking like $82 + for the first one I've looked at. So, I am hoping to check all ends before putting out the coin for a new one. Thanks again guys.

every once in a while my stop engine switch on the right control gets dirty and doesent connect so i have to clean it or switch it back and forth a few times to get it to work. usually if you are losing your voltage when tring to start the battery is bad theres two things about the battery the voltage and the amps the amps do the work so you can have low amps and still have normal voltage. but when the voltage comes down below 12 volts and gets low then the amprage almost always isnt there. if it is the battery it should start from a battery charger depending on how big it is. check your connections and stuff. me i would put jumper cables on to a car battery or something and see if it turns over it should be fine for a test try
ones life is the way it is only because you allow it make it happen.

My boy is back up and running. The battery was the problem. I bought a new one yesterday and charged it over night. Popped it in this morning and it started right up. My old battery was reading 12.87 on the ohm meter when I pulled it. The new one read 13.06 with the first time charge. I cant beleive that little of a differance made the differance.

Thank you to everyone who help me out and educated me more on keeping the old fizzer on the road. Now who wants the Birthday card? lol
