Ticking noise.. Runs like s**t.

When I turn my key to on, I hear a loud ticking noise for about 5 seconds and then it shuts off. I assume it's the fuel pump and maybe that would explain why it runs like ass. Any suggestions or insight?

on the fzr600, it does the same thing...but that noise means its working right...wouldnt be the running like ars problem....

Well it didn't do it when I bought the bike so I thought maybe it was a sign that the fuel pump was going out.

maybe your low on gassssss.. mine always did it louder and longer when i barely had any gas in it

Low on gas eh.. I don't think so but I guess it's possible. I suppose I could top it off tomorrow and see if that helps. It HAS been sitting all winter and I thought maybe that played a part too.

oh dam didnt even notice its a fzr 1000 , u prob got a fuel gauge on yours ... im sure that ticking noise is just fuel pump priming before startup , if it does it while riding then i would worry about it or after the bike is idleing .

It didn't do it last fall though that's what I thought something was up.

Welcome to my world sir. The clicking is the fuel pump. It'll only prime if there is no pressure or low pressure from what I gather. You won't hear it click every time you fire it up either. I bet it's just got a some bad gas in it. I'd drain that tank and run some fresh gas through it...and maybe some seafoam as well. Might also wanna check the exup valve to make sure it's opening. If that's stuck closed it'll really run bad. At worse..pull the carbs and give them a good cleaning (along with a good synch) and put in some new plugs. You'll be ready to rock after that.

second that.Mine ticks when pump primes.I only start mine every 10days and it clicks every time.if i start it up a second time no click.
think you got stale stuff or exup valves stuck shut.you should be able to see the cables moving and it should do a reste when you turn on ignition .

Maybe some fuel flow obstruction? If the bowls are always empty the pump is going to run longer initially and if the the engine is starved that could explain the crappy running (depending on when it runs like crap).

It barely idles at no choke and runs on full choke like it should run with no choke. By that, I just thought my fuel pump was shot. The carbs may not be getting enough fuel. I did put a can of Sea Foam in the tank last night but it had no immediate effects. I'm going to go check it out again tonight and see if anything has changed. Updates to follow....

and having introduced myself in a diferent post i may now add my 5 p worth of
experience

when the fuel pump stays unused during a long period of time it may have dificulties sucking
gas since it has emptied
has happened to me and all i did was feed it some gas manually-then it all was as smooth as always

Well I'm going to go cheap and try to get some new gas in the tank and see if that helps any. What kind of octane should I be running? I would assume 91+ because of the higher RPM's.

I've run 91+ in all my bikes, but that's just me. I've heard of people running regular grade gas in their 1k's and they run fine.
