Unfortunately, with these being downdraft carbs, the fuel level hits the top of the nozzle before it hits the breathers, so - yeah, it drains into the engine. Very common complaint with these bikes that have sat for awhile; a bit of rust from the tank gets between the float needle and the seat and holds it open, allowing the fuel to dribble through. Turning the fuel petcock off when parking the bike is very good practice.

Good to know.
I had assumed that when bike is not running, the fuel pump shut the fuel flow off completely?

Nope. If the tank is sufficiently full, the bike will run with the pump installed but unplugged.

So basically my pump could be broken and non functional and I wouldn't even know? Lol

Quick and easy check - connect the pump wires to 12v and ground. Does anything happen?

Hey Don, thanks a lot. this was actually a general question/statement.
But I am always happy to hear more about trouble shooting / diagnostic tips.
Right now, I am beginning the tear down process and will focus on carbs and engine first.

So yeah, fuel in oil. Just removed the oil filter and get fuel smell.

Fuel in oil is not too bad...it will have caused much less corrosion that water.
Refill with a cheap sacrificial oil to use as a flushing agent and run gently for a few miles then refilter and refill with correct oil.
I would still be tempted to remove sump and clean deposits.

To test pump in situ..turn off fuel and run engine/carbs dry.
Cycle ignition on/off and you will hear pump noise.
Anything over 3/4 full tank and fuel will supply carbs by gravity with or without an operating pump.

Well, I just found an issue:
Part of it broke off. Not sure if this renders the engine useless or not.

Now I am thinking about just rebuilding a new/almost new engine that came with the bike.
Only issue there: looks like it was left exposed to elements as well and looking down where the carbs normally sit, I can see dirt build up. But it probably makes more sense to get this one running than the one that's in the bike right now.

Get the broken mount welded back on.

No idea. I only found it by accident and while trying to clean the main gunk off the engine. The hole was covered with black silicone.
And no, don't have the broken pice.
But it's ok, I decided to put the spare engine in, which, according to its great paint job, probably doesn't have many miles on it.

Just finished the engine swap. New engine really seems to be new because when I changed the oil filter, the engine inside was not dirty at all. Same for when I added new oil. Was completely clean.
Still a lot to do but I already tried to crank it and it was fine.
Need to check compression next. I dropped off carbs yesterday for cleaning (I don't do this myself anymore) and should be back next week.
I'll open a new thread about the build.
