On to the exhaust.

The bike came with a stumpy Devil can, and as good as it sounded it just wouldn't do for this sort of build. Luckily a mate had an almost brand new Titanium can from an R1, one of his customers brought the bike and changed the can straight away, so i done a deal to do a small welding job in payment for it

Image

It looked about 6 foot long, so out came the grinder :-D

Image

Little test fit

Image

The headers that came with it were a full stainless 4-2-1 system, which was nice WOOT

Image

So i cut that up as well

Image

Then chopped up the can pipe

Image

Thing is, I'd never actually tried welding Titanium before :ermm:
But i do a lot of stainless tig welding so figured it can't be much different. Also i didn't have any Ti welding rods so i cut a thin strip off the bit i cut off to make some rods and just had a go

Image

Seemed alright

so i played with the settings a bit and done this WOOT
It's really nice stuff to weld

Image

Tacked the rest together for a test fit

The standard can on the bike doesn't run in line with the seat panel, so thats how i mounted it but the more i looked at it, the more it annoyed me. I hate things that don't line up, and i know if i left it like that I would regret it. So i tweaked it a bit so it lined up

Image

Much better

Nice work on the exhaust. I need to get around to building mine. Probably going with an R-77 can.

It was at this point that i got a call from my younger bro, who followed in big bro's footsteps and became a welder too :-D
The place he worked in had a small powder coating unit that he was going to use to do my bits, but he'd given his notice in and said i needed to get the bits to him soon if i wanted them done!

So i started the strip down

And then borrowed his shot blaster to clean some bits up

Took bloody ages :(

But managed to get it all to him in time

I like what you did with the washers to seal the bearings. Do you put any seal under them to keep sand and powder out?

I turned them out on the lathe to be a precision fit so i wouldn't have to seal them

I can be a bit anal when it comes to this sort of thing

I have been saving for a lathe and mill. Would help out a lot. How much would you change for a set for the fzr? I may be interested if it's less than bearings.

I think for the amount of time it took to make them, bearings would be a cheaper option. I would send you the ones i made already but i used them on another job

Since i'd repaired the bottom of the tank, i thought it best to seal it, but in looking on the net for the best one, i came across a piece on using electrickery to get most of the rust and shit out first.

So gathered the ingredients

Image

and started cooking :-D

Image

It wasn't long before it started bubbling

Image

and the sludge started appearing

Image

And this is what came out of it :yuck:

Image

So once it had dried out, i went in with the Por 15

Image

Looks like it done a good job

This. By the time your wheels need painting / powdercoating, it's probably time for new bearings anyway. Also, the rubber seals are unlikely to appreciate the temperatures in the curing oven.
