Took the clutch/basket out, started the bike and the noise is still there. I have another project bike i'm working on, so i'll shift my focus to it for a while, then get back to this one, hopefully in a few weeks, since it looks like I'll have to pull the engine and take it apart again.

Yep, dead cell in the battery. They wont spark at all if the voltage gets to low. And that does not sound good.
