Re: Choke questions

Does it smell really gassy when you're cranking it? Have you tried pulling the plugs after a bit of cranking? I think it might be a bit premature to blame this completely on a too much gas/not enough air situation. Warn or improperly gapped valves will often initially manifest themselves as a diffic...

Re: Problem starting

I'm going to guess that the bubbling you are hearing is the fluid in your battery "boiling" from being overcharged. This is common when the VR goes bad and starts letting too much voltage through. This will rapidly degrade the battery and it's most likely shot now (the voltage drop you described is ...

Re: Choke questions

I don't know where you got the idea that the throttle plates are not butterfly valves. They are. Does your bike idle OK once it's started? It sounds like your carbs need a tear down and new gaskets. If giving it a little throttle gets it to start right up then just go ahead and do that. It's not goi...

Re: I'm stumped

If it's been sitting a while your clutch plates might be stuck together. Since you said it slammed into gear I'm thinking this is what the problem is. I had that problem after my engine had sat for a year as I was rebuilding the bike. The fix is fairly simple. Just put the bike on the side stand and...

Those tiny little things are so useless you might as well not have any at all. If you can't see them until you're 6 inches away, what's the point?

From what you've shown us so far, there isn't any need to take the engine out of the bike.

Man, that thing is weird looking. Building something from nothing is awesome.

It's just begging for some ape hangers though.

Re: Chattering clutch plates?

Definitely open it up and check. If one of the bolts has backed out it could be rubbing on the inside of the cover and making a whole bunch of metal shavings. Suffice it to say, this is a bad thing.

Re: MAJOR PROBLEM-HELP PLEASE

It's probably so low because those studs are really long. Or are they bolts? I can't remember. Either way, they run the whole length of the cylinder and anchor into the block. Don't go cranking too hard or you may snap the stud/bolt.

Re: MAJOR PROBLEM-HELP PLEASE

That is correct. Ideally you should be putting new crush washers on every time you take plugs out but I've never known any one to do that. It's that washer that is doing the sealing. The plugs do not need to be cranked down all that hard. Pretty much every engine I've ever touched has had the plugs ...

If any one wants to get a HD camera that records to memory card on the cheap, check out Aiptek ( http://www.aiptek.com/ ). I picked up a 1080p camera from these guys for like $150 last year. The quality is acceptable to good, just not fantastic. The nice thing though is that at $150 (probably cheape...

Re: First Bike I got questions

The vortex kits are fine as long as you have your rear wheel reasonably straight and enough slack in the chain. All I've ever done is eyeball the wheel and I have virtually no wear on my rear sprocket after 3,000 miles or so. The gearing change with -1/+2 makes the bike a lot more pleasurable. The o...

Re: The ultimate head tool.

Patents have been turned into a tool almost exclusively for use by large corporations to be able to buy and sell ideas. They are essentially inaccessible for the garage inventor these days due to the high cost of registering ($300 for a physical patent IIRC) plus the money you need to spend on lawye...
