Mirrors and Base Plates
Hi all... I am currently doing the usual beginner customizations for my '98 600r and have a question that is kind of hard to phrase with google. I'm not trying to throw a ton of money into her and want to make feasible changes that look good. I know that mirrors off of YZF 600's (along with a slim f...

Excellent...thanks for the tip Don!DonTZ125 wrote:On the topic of destroying gaskets - if you wipe a thin film of oil onto the sealing surfaces of a paper / fibre gasket, it will still seal but won't adhere to the metal surfaces, allowing it to be removed intact and reused.

Re: Critique the Novice DIY'er's Observations
No, the clutch cover is on the opposite side and the gasket will be destroyed when you remove that cover. You can reuse the sprocket side gasket since it doesn't hold oil. Makes sense, thank you. Although, it does appear that my sprocket gasket is currently holding oil quite effectively lol . I wil...

Re: Critique the Novice DIY'er's Observations
It doesn't sound like you have major damage, so I would think you'd be fine until you get the manual and parts acquired. Don't forget that you'll need a new clutch cover gasket when you remove that side cover. Damn, good save man. I was just about to go out there and take off the sprocket cover and...

Re: Critique the Novice DIY'er's Observations
You're confusing the shift rod with the clutch push rod. Before you do anything - buy a Genuine Yamaha Service Manual - NOT a Haynes or Clymer version and NOT an owner's manual. And certainly don't buy a manual on disk... they're nice to have since you can print off what you need, but the scans are...

Re: Critique the Novice DIY'er's Observations
Since I've got you here, is it difficult to pull the rod and possibly straighten it? If it is broken, would pulling it to inspect it be the end of driving her until a new part is on hand. If it is relatively inexpensive, I could go ahead and have the part on hand or go ahead and replace it if bent. ...

Re: Critique the Novice DIY'er's Observations
Make sure you know where the leak is before draining the oil. Once you have the leaked tracked down, then drain the oil and do the work. Just keep some cardboard and towels handy for any oil spills... To trace the leak, I would need to loosen the two pinch bolts that connect the shift ro...

Re: Commuting and 520 Quick Accel Conversion
I use a 14/47, 520 chain combo on my FZR and commute with it. Like you, much of my commute is between 55-80 and the bike does just fine with it. I never feel like I'm cruising at too high RPM, but I do get slightly worse fuel mileage than a friend of mine with stock gearing. It did make a quite not...

Re: Critique the Novice DIY'er's Observations
Thanx for the replies rageD. Not making excuses for the drops, but all (except 1) occured on loose dirt roads with the bike being supported on the way down for the most part. Not even sure if some would consider it a true "drop", but it was embarrrasing nonetheless. The one that bent the left foot p...

Re: Commuting and 520 Quick Accel Conversion
As far as lube and frequency, I lube it up after every ride. If the bikes lucky, maybe her chain gets a squirt or two while I'm at it. Haha, I'm sure that jokes been done a million times. I do actually use PJ1 after every ride that could possibly warm the chain up a little bit so I use it A LOT (pro...

Re: Commuting and 520 Conversion
Ok, that makes sense. The only real difference that I was able to discover was basically what you we're referring to in regards to the lighter aluminum 520 sprockets being used due to the lighter 520 chain. I never have been able to make the connection with why those couple of oz/lb's would make tha...

Commuting and 520 Quick Accel Conversion
Will be changing chain and sprockets very soon. Have looked into the pro's and con's from members here and other sportbike forums that Google saw fit to direct me to. Seemed like people either loved it, or thought that it really didn't make a huge difference for streetriders/commuters. No one really...

Critique the Novice DIY'er's Observations
Well guys, been on here searching and learning from the ground up for a few months now :tks: . Updated my sig with the things that I've actually "done" with the exception of very mondain tasks ie: pulled all the body work for giggles and learnings sake, soldered loose electrical connections, checkin...

Re: Changing and mounting front/rear tires... any tips?
Well, my tire delimma ended up being a no brainer. Ended up getting both of the tires in the mail within a couple of days of each other and had to go on a 500 mile round trip run the day after getting said tires. Could of either removed them myself (one at a time due to stand "issues") and ran them ...
