Re: 93 FZR 1000 Engine Knocking
You better take a look at the bottom end. Rods & crank journals. Bad news 'cause the engine needs to come apart, if that is it.

"Might be worth dropping the HT leads and turning it over without spark "
If you mean, disconnect the spark plug wires, w/o grounding them you may damage the ignitor box if you spin the motor, something I was once told by a still-working Yamaha shop mechanic.

Re: 87 fzr1000 wheel change
A narrower tire will quicken steering response though it is more-noticeable in the front than the rear. Side to side transitions would be quicker too w/the narrower tire/wheel. There are multiple manufacturers for 18" radials now, used to be less. I have a '90 FZR1000 I haven't bothered to fit becau...

Re: Running ruff
'disassemble the carbs' does not mean removing them from their mounting brackets, they typically stay together except in the case of a Trans-Sahara racer after the contest! Just something to mention to a neophyte. Also, George's exclamation about eye protection is to be followed! Have you looked at ...

Re: 94 FZR1000 - Changing fork seals NIGHTMARE!
Did you look at earlier posts about forks & damper rods? One way to replace the fork cap is by using a speed wrench handle for sockets, the one that looks like an offset crank handle. I use that w/a deep socket to accommodate the cap preload adjuster shaft. This allows you to exert enough downward f...

Re: High Idle after running?
I am sorry my suggestion didn't arrive before Fate did. The unfortunate thing about being a novice is, as you found out, your reflexive reaction is often inadequate to deal with the situation. Another novice accident is carrying too-much speed into a corner, then panic-braking, which stands the bike...

Re: High Idle after running?
To me, this screams of a bad throttle cable adjustment. Perhaps even a kinked cable housing, pinched cable, incorrect run to the carbs for the cables, etc. I am surprised it wasn't mentioned already. You need to stop riding it until you fix the problem, you could easily get hurt, especially if you e...

Re: Fresh Gauge Faces
When your spouse or girlfriend is not looking go to the kitchen and pinch a fork from the cutlery drawer. Slip the tines on either side from underneath and use gentle pressure upwards.

Re: MSF Experienced Rider Course
Yes, it's worth it to learn countersteering and to practice evasive maneuvers. They also spend more time on handling dynamics. It is much more than the Beginning Rider course. I took it and thought it was worth it. Does it teach you to be 'Mike The Bike'? No.

Re: how to keep your damper rod from turning
George: Yes there was an MX track in Dania until a few yrs. ago & it was in the flight path for the Ft. Laud. airport so noise wasn't a problem. Eventually their lease ran-out and I don't think the land is currently used for anything. Incidentally, my friend Steve St. Clair is from Jersey, and I don...

George, thanks for the directions, I will take a look at them. Always willing to learn. Next week is an AMCA meet in Dania Beach FL. There is a great turnout of bikes & people, lots of British, Italian, German & USA bikes. http://www.motorcyclemonster.com/events/dania-beach-vintage-motorcycle-2011-0...

Re: how to keep your damper rod from turning
George, I just read your 600 cartridge emulator install and was entertained by it. It is a factual account with some (Queen's English) 'humour' to it. I have a spare set of damper rods for my '87 1000 so I may try the mod. I have read of them many years ago on other non-cartridge forks and always wo...

Re: how to keep your damper rod from turning
I may be looking in the wrong place but I went to the FZR WICKI and found two subjects 'fork seal replacement' and 'front fork tuning.' In neither did I find any info on what I posted. I may have not accessed it properly, but I went the the WICKI and was unable to access your resource. If you can te...
